Key Features:
  • Dimensions: 43" x 10.5" x 19"
  • Redesigned Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed molded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to minimize distortion and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible.
  • A Linear Travel Suspension maximizes dynamics for enhanced, detailed performance. LTS Tweeters have been a hallmark of previous Reference lines, as well as their flagship Klipsch Palladium series, making it a core component of some of the best speakers in the world.
  • Spun Copper Cerametallic Woofers represent the pinnacle of Klipsch driver design, maintaining exceptional rigidity and lightweight construction, for minimal cone breakup and distortion. When paired with the Tractrix Horn-loaded LTS tweeter, it provides speaker efficiency highest in its class.
  • Utilizing Tractrix geometry, the Reference Premiere ports allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet - for the cleanest, most powerful low frequency response on the market.
  • MDF Cabinet With Real Wood Veneer Finish
  • Strong, Flexible, Removable Grille attaches magnetically for an elegant transition from powerful showstopper to discrete performance piece.

If you are fully new to this, just a heads up - you will see many conflicting opinions on any speaker system because people have a different sound preferences. You will also come across many snobbish posts looking down on Klipsch saying something it is crap compared to X or Y brand. Many a times, what these folks conveniently forget is that, yes, overall, those brands could be much better than Klipsch, but they also cost a ton. It is like PC gamers with a $4k rig telling looking down on XBox players! My whole point being, audio systems follows the law of diminishing returns beyond a point. If you are fine with something that overall is pretty great value, nothing comes close to the Klipsch RP series when on a deal. However, if you are fine with putting away several thousands more, then definitely do a much of research and auditioning (at big box stores like Best Buy) before deciding on which ones to go with. Auditioning speakers is still good in any case as you may suddenly realize you prefer one specific brand over the others.

You can refer some guides like https://www.svsound.com/blogs/spe...-placement or https://www.audioholics.com/home-theater-setup (audioholics is pretty great overall for guidance - check out their youtube videos as well) to start with. One thing to note is - most of the modern day Home Theatre Receivers have their own proprietary room audio calibration software - YPAO for Yamaha, Audyssey/Audyssey XT32 for Denon/Marantz etc. Depending on where you place the speakers, and where you intend to sit, the calibration software will optimize the audio for your listening position. You can then fine tune it to your liking. So - don't worry too much about the room layout if it is not rectangular. The height of your room helps decide whether you need height speakers or atmos or such. The size of your room helps decide how many channels/speakers you need to have a good audio experience.

This is going to be a fun journey for you. Good luck!
This is a really good deal.
It is an older model but honestly the nex gen, the RP-8000fa was a slight technical downgrade(depending your view)(though still more than decent - see the Audioholics view of the non atmos version https://www.audioholics.com/tower...conclusion ).
The brand new model(Rp-8060faII $3k a pair) is indeed an upgrade over this RP-280FA but costs a bundle more and the real wood veneer on these will be an asset to many folks around.

Here is an old review of the RP-280FA by Brent Butterworth who is a measurement forward reviewer, now contributes often to the Wirecutter and is IMHO pretty trust worthy historically.
https://hometheaterreview.com/kli...-reviewed/ His comparison set in the review is a pair of REVEL towers which matters to some.
For gods sake, not walnut again !

just bought this and now wondering what to get for center... i am slowly replacing my old speakers thats more than 15 years old. I was thinking to get RP-504c II for the center but not seeing any deals lately. Any suggestion? Thanks
I was also planning to get RP-504c, but I see 404c is for $279 in Adorama. Not sure how much of a difference the 504c makes

I'm in same boat. Ordered these 280fa and looking for a center. Optimally they would get the walnut gen1 504c back in stock at $350. The Options I am considering are piano black gen1 504c for $400 at Amazon, Gen2 504C for $480 (lots of places), or this gen1 404c in walnut for $280.

Just curious, how do they keep finding these old stock but new speakers? They have been discontinued since 2018. So were they just sitting in a Chinese warehouse for 4 years? Are they somehow still making 2 generations old models?

I figured they just kept making them. Kind of how Apple keeps making and selling older model watches or phones

Are these an overkill for surround speakers in the back? I have a good B&W pair for the front. But considering this for the surround since these have atmos as well

A few things to think about and consider.

Sound signatures are very different.

People in your seats, if their ears don't have a direct line of sight to all woofers/tweeter the sound is blocked.

Having only rear Atmos modules is not ideal and really recommended.

These are easy to drive. Pretty much can't go wrong with any receiver you choose

Got these 2 years ago for this price. It's a MIRACLE that these are for sale for the SAME PRICE after everything else has become 30-50% more expensive.

If you are on the fence, these are the highest quality to price ratio speakers available anywhere, period.
Great for music and exceptional for home theater/gaming.

Waiting for the Onkyo 6050 to go back to $400 at Costco, as I have read Onkyo work well with Klipsch.

You're doing yourself a disservice if you hook these up to a standard receiver and think they're powerful enough. I understand at peak output you are within range, but if you're investing in a good audio system, IMO you really need a separate amplifier.

Crown XLS1502 paired with the output signal from any decent receiver will get you a strong performing system and really make these sound the way they were intended.

If you Google trigger output from receivers to amplifiers, you can build your own for ~$20 and that way whenever your receiver powers on the amp will kick in. This allows you to put the amp in a better ventilated area if it's considered unsightly.

Is the gen 1 the matching center? Or does it really matter between it and gen 2?

Questions to others who got these speakers...were the boxes they shipped in really badly worn? Were the speaker feet screws and carpet screws found loose in the bottom of the box. I am trying to determine if Adorama sent me used speakers. Thanks for any help.
