I gave my small 10 year old son a full size squire strat. He had some difficulty with the 25.5 scale length. I bought him a squire HH mustang because of the 24" scale length. It is much easier for him to play.

....but he still has to play my guitars instead if his....

The neck on these feel raw. I plan to hit his with some fine sand paper one day. Otherwise great guitar!

I had one of these in white and it was a decent guitar. I replaced the pickups and tuners and put polyurethane on the neck.

I would say this is a perfect first guitar. You aren't really going to get a name brand guitar, new for much cheaper.

Do I need to buy anything else for a total beginner? I see a few sets that include an amp, case, etc.

You can get an amp and instrument cable or a wireless transmitter that connects to headphones.

You need some sort of amp, a guitar cable and some picks.

Alternatively, you could get a headphones amp and not need the cable.

What I would do is get the guitar center amp and the champion 20 amp by fender. You save an additional 10% off both and you will have some effects from your amp, which are really great to have and expensive to buy as pedals.
