FYI, non-true RMS meters are not inherently lower quality, and are not necessarily produced for lower costs. Often the same metering ICs are used for true RMS and non-true RMS meters, just with an option pin to enable either mode.

The reason why non-true RMS meters are sold from reputable brands, is because many service manuals, especially for older equipment, have values and maintenance requirements written for non-true RMS meters. If you use a true RMS meter for these applications, your measured values will not match the expected and specified values, even if the equipment being maintained is working fine.


Now, that's not to say this Klein meter isn't a cheap and junky meter, but being non-true RMS is not an indicator one way or another.

For those who are not very knowledgeable on stuff like this, this meter is the one of a few Klein makes that is not a true RMS meter. This is a dollar store meter that has been badged Klein.

If you will ever have the need to measure a non true sine wave, such as generator output, you're going to have a bad time with this.

If you don't care about reliability or accuracy of a digital meter, don't buy this Klein, go buy some cheaper version. If you want true-rms, buy the industry standard Fluke 110 or equivalent.

I'm looking up the differences from the MM400. This one weighs 0.41kg (vs 0.23kg), can do 1000V (vs 600V), is physically stronger (IP42, drop rated), comes with alligator clips, can test 1000uF (vs 200uF), can test 500kHz (vs 50kHz), and has a lead warning. Neither is trueRMS, you need the MM700 on up for that.
For a car multimeter I'm sticking with the MM400 that I just bought for the same price because of its size.

For testing outlets and car battery voltages you should be fine. The Klein is a little bit better on build quality, but the Kaiweets actually has a little bit better features. True rms is good to have if you're testing inverters but it's not needed for %95 of users

Can either of these test milli-amps when pulling fuses to find a parasitic draw on a car? I always struggle with this.

I'm with ya on this! I have one now on my 2004 F-150. I had to take the cables off the battery and put my NOCO 10 on it to bring it back to life and maintain it. I think it's a big drain somewhere because when I had the battery fully charged, I put the cables back on and the maintainer back on immediately after, it died in like 24 hrs! Maintainer couldn't keep up.

Need to pull fuses I think next…

The mm600 can do even better, micro-amps. The last time I had a parasitic draw it turned out to be the battery itself. I've had so many 1-2 year old lead-acid batteries go bad in the last 2 or 3 years...
