Been getting ads for espresso machines and this one might be a good fit for some. Note that you have to use Illy's own capsules though they look similar in price to Nespresso's.

Buy at least 12 cans of capsules (around $240 for 252 capsules) and get the Y3.3 machine valued at $150 for free or the better looking X7.1 valued at $300 for $75.

I've always wanted to try this machine, but normally it's too pricey to buy the machine "and" the capsules. This sweetens the deal to get the machine for free. The capsules run about 95¢ each (too rich for my blood), but this capsule espresso system has refillables that appear to work. Normally, these refillables are more trouble than they're worth. These look promising for after the initial capsules run out.

This reminds me of the Nespresso machine program with the exception of paying it all upfront (instead of monthly charges/credits). I wish they brought that back (got my Vertuo machine from that).

I assume there's a no cross-compatibility between Illy and Nespresso.

Refillable pods have been marketed to consumers for over 10 years, and they've been a dysfunctional scam since day one. It's a concept that works to sell the reusable pod - it's nearly never functional or comparable in quality. Tons of review sites can back that up.

I looked into reusable capsules in my early days as well. The main benefits were lower cost and personal selection.

But the other reviews all pointed to the issues you made, which was that functionally and qualitatively, they don't match up.

Then I realized that for the amount of time I'd need to commit to filling my own capsules, including getting a grinder, making just enough so it's fresh, etc., it was too much of a time waster to be of benefit.

The real game changer was when I realized you can get 3rd party capsules like Peet's or L'or for fraction of the OL Nespresso price.

It was a no-brainer at that point when $0.35 or under vs. $0.70 for Nespresso's.

Dosage is 7g per pod. At 252 pods and $240 that's $136/kilo - convenience ain't cheap.

I think that's an overstatement to just dismiss them out of hand. I took your advice and looked up refillable coffee pod reviews, and actually there are more review sites that recommend them than not. It also depends on how amenable the capsule design is for refilling. For example, to this day there are no usable refillable capsules for the Lavazza BLUE system due to the design of the capsule and how they are pierced. I looked into Dolce Gusto at one point because the refillable capsules for them seem to be large enough to hold a proper dose of coffee. The biggest complaint I've seen of refillables that they don't hold as much coffee as the disposable capsules and therefore don't make as good of a shot. The second-biggest complaint seems to be they're a pain in the butt. Read the verified purchase reviews for the Illy refillables, they seem legit to me.

It is nice to have if you like the machine itself and the taste of Illy's coffees.
Illy does this promotion once or twice per year more or less based on previous years.
If you like the Illy's coffee taste and have machine for K-Cup already, you can purchase Illy's K-Cup compatible capsules.
But the machine is visually nice machines, although takes quite a space in the decent size of kitchen.
In any case it is good promotion for Illy coffee lovers.

Agreed but mid grade coffee from a local roaster where i'm at runs about $18-$20 for 340 grams. Considering you need about 18 grams for a cup of pour over, the per cup price is very similar at around 95 cents.

Illy is the best. I have almost every type of machine and I would have to say the Illy coffee from the Illy pods in the Illy machines is the best, so much better than my Nespresso.

If you buy Lavazza or other bean or ground coffee on sale (under $15 per kilo), then make your own coffee with an espresso machine or Moka pot, you get $0.10 per serving. Walmart has an excellent espresso machine by Farberware for $66.00, sometimes on sale for $60.00. A Bialetti Moka machine on Amazon is also inexpensive. A Crups burr grinder is $40.00 on Amazon. The resulting coffee can be tailored to your own taste by varying the coffee grind size, amount of coffee, amount of water, etc.
