Not sure why its voted down. its the best price I have seen for Reference premier floor standing speaker (RP 280F) in ebony color and that too from a Klipsch authorized dealer. $299 each or $598 for a pair with free shipping, no prime membership needed.

Only if you want to use them for Atmos. Most folks wanting speakers for a 2 channel setup or a non Atmos HT setup will prefer these.

I've had these for nearing 3 years now. I got them for like 780 for the pair. Amazing set of towers. These are just the previous models of the 8000f towers. I prefer the stand on these anyway. These hit hard too. My SVS sub went into safety shutoff after a few power surges and I didn't even notice for a few days because these towers were putting in work. Highly recommend these

Obviously bookshelf speakers would be cheaper, but would these be good, bad or the same as Surround Sound speakers?

RP280FA's has atmos speakers built into the top of the towers and works by reflecting sound off the ceiling, also have a bigger depth (19" vs 17"). If you have a flat celling of about 8 to 10 feet height and is ok with the walnut wood color, then RP-280FA are a better deal for $50 more.
Not okay with walnut color since other set up is black color

I've never had success with speakers that are supposed to reflect sound off a ceiling or walls.

Would these be decent Front L & R with a RP-404C Center and RP 600m rears?

My personal opinion is the RP 600M is way over kill for rears.

I have RP 150M and I hate putting such a quality speaker as a rear or side. It's an excellent speaker and it's job is reduced to playing some special sound effects or ambient noise like wind.

I used the cheap $100 for two Klipsch speakers from Costco for my sides and rears and never noticed the difference when putting many hundred dollar speakers back there

I got a pair of Polk Monitor 7C's from Stereo Advantage in 1986 that also still work and sound great.
Speakers working for 4 years is not noteworthy
