Can't an m.2 slot be added with an add-in card, if needed?

You can. However, if you use a GPU, you are stuck with PCIe 2.0 x1 which is slower in raw throughput than SATAIII, but queue depth and latency probably make it worth it.

This is just a bottom of the barrel board.

I literally just build an old pc from leftover parts with an A320m mobo and a Ryzen 5 1600 for my nephew. Pop in a 500gb sata ssd, 8gb ram, oem fan, gpu, 600w PS and a small tower. Plenty of speed for school and light gaming.

Arg... I guess if you happen to find you have a 1600 from a 5600 upgrade, it makes sense, but be aware that the 5xxxx cpu's wont work on a 320 MB chipset. It should be a $30 board, but I bet there is a lot of lonely ryzens looking to get remarried and that will make these old boards a bit more valuable I guess.

yeah, exactly why I ordered one. I have leftover parts from upgrading my daughters gaming PC and this board is going to get her old cpu and gpu and a 500gb ssd , a inexpensive antec case with some rgb and gift for someone

This board certainly supports most 5000 series CPUs
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/A...upport#cpu

If it does so out of the box is another question.

I stand corrected.. Been a few months since I looked into it, but I thought it was a 320 chipset problem, but this must have been solved. This will get me to look at my 320 board and see if a 5600g will work in it.. I have a 1600 in it, but a 5600g would be best in my mind.

Edit:.. I guess my old GA-320M-S2H has a reason for a 5600g.. That was not the case a few months ago.. Thanks for the heads up!

All that said there will be even more lonely 1600's looking for bad old boards..

I think it was in issue with people expecting AM4 boards to support all AM4 processors, then AMD came out and said that wouldn't be the case. So many people got upset over it that AMD reversed course, and decided to support the newer chips on the older boards.

Really could use this. Have a 5600G and am thinking of upgrading it to a 5700g. Would swamp the 5600g in this as my backup pc... but it would need a bios update first. I am guessing, it is not compatible out of the box.

I have the ASUS version of this board running a cheap gaming build with a Ryzen 5500 and 6650xt. Would have bought the MSI for a few dollars less but the lack of M.2 port pushed me away. Needed a BIOS update out of the box to support the CPU but I had an older chip with which to do so and it's been rock solid so far. Great value these A320M boards provide when paired with a low/mid tier CPU. Excellent basis for a $400-$500 gaming PC. Especially since you can get a board, 16gb RAM, and a 1TB SSD for around $150 at current prices and pick your poison on CPU/GPU.
