This is a M.2 SATA drive, be careful if you're looking for a NVMe (PCIe) SSD, you need to get the MP33 for $5 more in this case.

But if a M.2 SATA SSD is what you're looking for this is a great price.
This exactly. MacBook Air 2012 and older requires SATA and unable to use NVMe. This with adapter (for macbook air) = more space for older devices on the cheap. I bought one for $25 last week, so it's even better now at the current price. This is mainly for lowest price, not highest performance per price or anything like that (big duh). In fact, the NVMe people shouldn't even be looking at this while complaining about it.

genuine question, why would someone choose this over 2.5" form factor?

Compact, doesn't require cables, could be placed in an external enclosure for a fast portable drive.

Quick answer: because the slot/device they want to upgrade only supports this type of drive.

From what I understand, it's the same SATA III standard with no wires and less space taken up thanks to the M.2 spec. Many older devices and even some newer budget laptops (such as the Walmart Gateways that always seem to hit FP) only support M.2 SATA drives.

I saw this yesterday while I was looking for a m2 data for a new to me T630 I grabbed to run HAOS. But instead I grabbed a PNY 256 for $21. I wasn't familiar with this manufacturer

I've never found anything from Team, be it SSDs or RAM, to be reliable.

I bought one of the Gateway laptops with the 11th gen i5 / 16GB RAM / 2 m2 SATA slots (on clearance for $100) and this would be perfect if I needed it. Tried NVME but it did not work.

There is a limited audience for sure, but it's out there.

Some laptops don't have a 2.5" form factor slot, but only have an M.2 slot and that M.2 slot isn't a NVMe compatible controller on the bus - an example I can think of off the top of my head: ThinkPad T460s

No. I buy lots of SSDs. These never hold up. Comparable priced/performance brand that seems to last is SP.

serious question, can you fit this 2280 drive into a spot held by a 2242? I know the screw can't be used to secure the drive anymore, but is it REALLY necessary to secure it like that?

If you have an older functional laptop with 128gb m2 sata boot drive, can be great storage enhancement.

You don't necessarily NEED the mounting screw but it's more about the length of the card. If there is space behind it, then yes you could use it. But if there is some sort of capacitor or heat sink in the way then you can't use it.

However...some drives can simply be cut down to size because the components of them don't actually go to the end of the card. It's just the plastic board to make the length they advertise. But definitely look up your model before destroying your drive.
