Kingston
Write Speed Up to 450 MB/s
Read Speed Up to 500 MB/s

Crucial MX500
reads/writes up to 560/510MB/s
Looks like the crucial is not a bad deal at $58 for the 1tb.

How much value (additional performance) does that gigabyte of dram provide?
DRAM in an SSD is used to store a map of where the data blocks are located on the drive. On SSD's without DRAM, that data is stored in the NAND flash or in system memory if the controller supports Host Memory Buffer (HMB).

In most day-to-day operations, there is very little difference in performance between the three types. For workloads that benefit from high random read and write performance, DRAM can definitely offer an advantage. DRAM can also reduce wear on NAND cells since they are relieved from the duty of storing the data map.

Most people will recommend an SSD with DRAM for your OS disk/volume or if you use applications that do a lot of mixed I/O, particularly random I/O. SSD's without DRAM will still be more performant than an HDD, but are typically best suited for general storage needs.

There are a lot more nuances around this topic, but I hope that helps.

If you push an ssd without dram hard enough (large file transfers, long sustained writes), then the drive can slow down to be no better than an old HDD.

Technically you can do the same to a drive with DRAM, but it takes a substantially longer time to do so, and you might complete your operation before it reaches that wall.

If you don't think you'll have any long sustained writes, then you might not run into the issue, but I find I move stuff around enough where it's a nice piece of mind, considering how big files can get these days.

fantastic drive !! After putting this drive in, my old desktop now runs nearly as fast as my newest one for gaming and day to day computing.

didn't hurt that i got it for $15 cheaper just 2 weeks back from this limited quantity deal -

But still a great price in this deal. Highly recommended.

Any feedback on this vs the Kingston from yesterday? link

I bought the Kingston. I plan to use this as fast storage for a surveillance computer. HDD will be the archive. I wonder if this is better choice over Kingston
I think this is better than the Kingston one that has no dram. And simply MX500 can't be compared to a Kingston that you provided a link to. It is just an upper tier ssd.

To have a dram helps in performance, but for me the real reason that I want a dram is for the longevity of the sdd itself.

Of course there is a premium added to get a dram one. but if the price difference is less than $20-30, I'm definitely go with the mx500.

dram is more considered as sustained transfer speed so it doesn't overload your system ram with files

the main complaint is not read but writing larger files but in a console it's fine; in storage is fine; in boot drive it's fine but in media workflow it's not because after 30 secs of transferring/writing then it will slow down to 30mbit/s instead of the theoretical max sata

Umm, sorry guys but that information is completely wrong. DRAM does not improve performance of long sustained transfers. It mostly improves performance of short random IO. I suggest you do some more reading on the subject, for example:

THIS is correct.

Practically speaking, it is better to use a drive with DRAM for your OS. If the drive is just used for storage of large files such as media or games, then DRAM-less is fine.

That's true, but you're also not likely to hit that limit without doing lots of sustained writes.

Even low/mid-end drives with fast cache VS dram can sustain good write speeds for a certain amount of time before the cache simply can't keep up.

sorry was trying to mention about the slc cache instead of dram being two different functions

but i'm corrected, dram for faster reads and slc cache is my mistake maintaining faster transfer speeds

in a nutshell shouldn't affect majority of individuals that just needs an ssd

Many SSDs use SLC cache and will have significantly reduced sustained write performance after that cache is exhausted, regardless if they have DRAM or not. But the size threshold and the amount of degradation varies a lot between different models depending on the controller, memory type, etc. The best way to get info on this is to look for tests/reviews of the drives that you are interested in.

Another thing that people should be aware of when shopping for an SSDs:

- They tend to slow down as they approach full capacity.
- Larger capacity drives tend to have greater write endurance.

So it is beneficial to buy a larger capacity than you actually need.

a bit worried about what people are saying about the more recent releases/batches of the crucial mx500 drives Frown .. on the other hand I would be remiss if I didn't point out that the MX500 1 TB I've had installed in my PC as the C drive for two years now is still working fine as is the MX500 drive in my daughter's and son's desktop PC's one year later , all Windows 10 " C " drives so hopefully that's a good sign Smilie ..
