Textnow doesn't give the option to delete previous text messages. Kinda weird.
For anyone unfamiliar you must use Textnow's app for all your absolutely free calling and texting. Cellular data is sold separately and is never free. You'll need an Android or iOS device to run the Textnow app.
You'll be a given a new phone number when you sign up. If you don't use the service for awhile you lose that phone number. They'll give you another different phone number when you return to using the service. If you want to keep your same number forever without restrictions I beleive there is a one time fee to get that done.
Trying to remember which network the free SIM runs on. Either way if you have an unlocked phone this is a great freebie to use as a backup phone. All the calls and texts are over LTE wireless via the Textnow app. The app has advertisements of course.
Textnow is just fine for every day use despite the occasional ad playing when you end your phone call. The ad banner in the texting window is bearable. It's a free SIM and a free app for completley free calls and free texting with a free signal from a cell tower. While google voice is nice they don't offer a free SIM with free cell service as can be had in this deal. Google voice you're either on wifi or you are paying for cellular data in some fashion. If junior just needs to call mom to pick him up from soccer practice and send texts to his friends this deal is perfect.
Got this service and added it to one of my Gmail 2fa, tried to get the verification but now they want you to pay the service fee for those short 2fa messages. Now can't access unless I pay, that's how they'll get you!

You have to constantly use it or it gets deactivated, none of these lies about the SIM is good forever. You apparently may be able to talk to customer service and they can reactivate your sim but I didn't even try.
The need to constantly use it also pertains to keeping your phone number, they'll drop your number if you don't use it within a week? I think it's a week, honestly might be 3 days. Google voice is like 3 months.
NEVER port-in a number you want to keep and/or use for long term. They'll lose it on you 99% chance, even if you pay the $4.99/year to keep your number.
Can you register for Whatsapp using this service? Or does Whatsapp recognize the number as voip and block you from signing up?
I have 3 voip numbers - TextNow, Google Voice and Magic Jack. Whats App would not accept TextNow and Google Voice. However it did accept Magic Jack. I notice someone said earlier that Whats App accepted their Google Voice number. I guess try them. At the worst, you'd have to use someone's cell phone number who will never use Whats App. The problem there is Whats App will identify your calls by that person's name. Frankly, I can't understand why Whats App even needs a cell phone number to set up their service.
Yes. Any TextNow account can sign into the app and it should work just fine. At least this was the case when I gave it a test drive earlier this year. You could even use multiple TextNow accounts with the same SIM on the same phone, just not more than one at a time.
thanks, that's helpful info

5g card only. Will it work on a non-5G phone?
also, must log into your email or Facebook account to order.
For me it forced me to Sign In with Apple, Google or Facebook— no email allowed . But I started the log in process using a Google account and it took me to the email page using my Googel account email — there i just deleted that email and used my spam absorbing email account that I only uses for crud like this

Would it get deactivated if I just keep this sim in an iPad?
It should not but would advise making at least one outgoing phone call per week via the app regardless since that is needed to keep your phone number from being released from your account.

Before freedompop used to have the same deal. But be warned. They will get you one way or the other. They will put you on autopay and find a way to make you pay. With freedom pop they just changed subscription tier on their own and drained 500$ from a bank account of a friend who was here temporarily and wanted a service whenever he visited. Make sure you use privacy app and put a hard cap on amount that can be charged to the card by this service.

By reading the thread, it seems that TextNow offers:
No free cellular minutes
No free data
All TextNow calls go through data which is likely to have lags.
This is only a sim card for their prepaid service.
