This is a great shaver. Sadly however, the base cleaning station gets dirty and tends to malfunction over time. Also the outer blade and foil replacements are very expensive. So this seems like a good deal considering you get a replacement foil, however, you should really just replace the blade and foil together, though the blade replacement cycle is actually longer.

For myself however, I have realized that just buying a new unit with a new cleaning station is a better deal than buying a replacement foil and blade over time. Also the battery tends to grow old and doesn't keep charge as it used to (though it is still excellent).

All in all, I'd suggest doing what I do and just buy a new full unit when the time comes to replace blade and foil. There was a deal for the unit without blade and foil that I just bought.

Panasonic makes it very difficult to figure out the exact differences. You will have to study the description carefully, but you will usually find something or the other. But over the years, the differences that have been significant have been number of blades, blade and foil material, and the speed of the motor. I could just as easily use a model from 10 years ago and be happy with it. It has been very consistent.

Also as you can see from this link [panasonic.com], they do indulge in making channel/retailer specific model numbers, so you'll have to look carefully.

I don't know about the Arc5, but I've used an Arc3 for years and I have no idea why anyone would need a cleaning station. Rinse off the screen and blades under the faucet once a week and it's like new.

I use both the cleaning and the charging. I need the cleaning detergent to do its job to keep the blades very well cleaned and sharp. I can tell the difference if I don't use it within an few days. Of course my case my be different - I use a shaving oil rather than cream. This requires very thorough cleaning. I actually first do the hand soap with high speed cleaning mode first, and then put it in the cleaning station to clean and charge. I like the charger stand because it just makes for a convenient place to store the shaver.

I have in the past had these same thoughts about the stand, and even tried doing without it and with it. Overall, it is worth the extra money, if you consider that the shaver will last you 2 years easily.
