Sony SS-CS5 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Black, Pair) on sale for $98 ($199 orig)
It's commonly avail for around $120 to $140 also so there is no great rush.

Rave reviews from a few audio reviewers on YT but not everyone. cheapaudioman YT is wild about them.
I just tried these and don't think you'll find something comparable for $100.
That being said, I preferred the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 in every case even with subwoofer.
Sony SS-CS5 bass is lacking, but not altogether missing. For $100 I'd look around craigslist as there are always great deals if you don't mind driving around.
The Elacs are $240, mixed reviews from rave to neutral but positive. They sounded all around tighter and more well defined and deeper base, better staging than the sony.
The sony is bright as it has a mid and tweeter.
I'm also going to test the Arrow BR03 and Klipsch RP-600M this week. I tested the Polk XT20 and they were bad all around comparatively, don't recommend.

I got these used / like new in mid-February of this year for $65 from Amazon. Good set of speakers for the money. Used them for a few months as part of a nightstand setup with a small Emotiva amp. It worked well.

Also I think my TV has the option to use the TV speakers as a center Channel.
This is the best value in the Sony CORE speaker setup, and sound is very comparable to the SSCS3 (tower) speakers.
Sounds great for a home theater (I'm using 4x of these in a 7.1.4 setup) and I'd say they even work better as a center channel than sonys own center channel speaker in this line.
These would be great for a 2.1 music setup all the way up to something much larger. definitely grab a subwoofer with them if you can, but I highly recommend staying away from the SONY sub as it's probably the weakest in this line

I have a ridiculous amount of speakers from Focal, B&W, Martin Logan, Fluance, etc.
These little speakers punch way above their weight and I'd be proud to have them right alongside my Klipsch RP-600m or my Elac Unifi.
They are a marvel of engineering and require very little power to blow your mind.
Pair with a good sub and play with your crossover.
My ears like it at 100hz for these beauties.
