I've refused every deal i've seen in the past 3-4 years because I don't want to get "sucked in" but the 4wd version of this deal is insanely good. If I were into RC i'd have bought at least 2 but I did buy one.
You can change the gear ratios in the axles just like a real truck and it's a newer concept that comes along with Crawlers/Real style trucks.
These have live solid axles vs independent suspension which add to realism and in some ways are more protected/strong but the downside is they simply won't handle as well and quite a few monster trucks have independent suspensions. This will articulate like a crawler and you can install rear steering too.
You can easily install a Brushless system and even this system is 3s capable but even the review says it's not needed as the brushed system is plenty. I have a kit or 2 laying around in the 80amp range(twice as powerful) but more speed isn't really what this is about.
It can handle up to a 8000mah 2s lipo battery which is insane for runtime(about 30 min without stopping) 5000 is safer so it wont build heat. Buy the B6 cheap charger on amazon. It can charge every battery you can imagine including your car battery for $30. I use mine to charge my boat batteries. https://www.amazon.com/Hobby-Fans...131&sr=8-2

I also think the 2wd buggy could make a decent racer at your local track with some better tires and setup but like I said i'm not trying to go down that road. 2wd is more difficult to handle but it teaches the fundamentals. If they have metal gears in the diffs(I'll check) then they would also make great speed run vehicles with a powerful 3s brushless system.
Lipos perform much better than Nimh but they are more dangerous and prone to exploding if over-discharged. If going for lipos, you would want to teach your kids not to run the battery too low, or always supervise them when they are using it
I ended up getting a 4x4 Hooligan, and picked up a spare spur gear since that was only like $3 more.

I have a Xinlehong Q901 4WD and love it, super fast around 30mph (52Km/hr). One part broke and had to replace it (lots of parts on aliexpress) otherwise it has been wonderfully fun in mud and snow. The only problem is that its WAY too fast for anyone so I wish it had a slower mode. The 4WD works very well almost like a real car lol.
I watched videos of this JEGs 4x4 and it seems top heavy so it rolls over a lot. My Xinlehong Q901 does not roll over when turning super fast but just drifts.

This is more "scale" RC but can perform well. The main thing is the Xinlehong isn't hobby grade but this is. This is a CEN H150 which sells for over $300 under that brand.
To put it simply this is 10x the vehicle compared to the Q901.

I'd suggest, and this is my personal experience from trying to sate my desires by picking from the bottom of the RC Car tree, get a 2WD Traxxas Rustler. Upgradable to the max, except you're stuck with 2WD and repair parts are available anywhere. Traxxas is known for their parts availability. I was on vacation and broke an obscure part... sure enough the store one town over had it! It's a blast! You can keep it simple and stock or you can upgrade the motor, suspension etc...

The only main difference is the body so to most it wont look remotely the same but it is underneath. The G-force buggy goes for around $250 and is hobby grade. It's made in Taiwan and sort of what RC guys call vintage. There's a company out there that makes similar products called Tamiya. It's brushless capable and could be made to be very fast as it sits if it's 3s capable it'll go about 35mph but with a brushless system for under $50 could easily go 55mph(with really high gearing)
It's a capable enough racer for beginners but the most important part of racing is replacement parts because you WILL break things. To be clear if you're racing on a typical weekend you'll be outclassed by some of the more modern carbon fiber types. For bashing around the yard the $50 2wd truck is better but the 4x4's are a step above(made by CEN).
You could put a 3s brushless system in either of the $50 units and run 55mph plus.(amazon goolRC for around $35). For under $100 you can run 40-60mph depending on gearing but if you don't know what you're doing you'll crash it and at that speed you can imagine what happens.

Here's a very similar buggy with the GoolRC system in it. You can simply copy what this guy does and get similar results. In this type of RC there's a pinion and a spur which will give you gear ratios. The pinion is on the motor and the spur is on the vehicle. Chinese RC are just fine and the prices for parts are good.
$99 and it comes with the worst servo you can buy and friction shocks.

But if you don't know if your kid really likes it then agree it is not wise to splurge up front.
