I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.
Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.
It's Android - sky is the limit.

Why do I need this? Is it basically a fire stick with plex and nvidia cloud gaming?

Can you "jail break" it, like a Firestick with 3rd party apps?

Nothing like paying 180 bucks to deal with ads on the home screen and on your remote 😐

Better than the Xbox or playstation? This is the current cost of a Xbox one x which was a ton more horsepower and plays Blu-ray.

But the updates can definitely break it for years. I'm at the point where it's stable but after having the sound cutting out problem for a year after one update I now look at the official forums and check for weeks if the updates break things, and sadly There's lots of problems there. So it is amazing, but man it will really frustrate you sometimes.

It's an android box that has 4k upscaling of all media and streaming games. It's not necessarily the best gaming platform but it is functionally better than any other android streaming platform. I love it for occasionally using nVidia game stream, but mostly use it for the 4k upscale of movies/games/sports.

It's more responsive, better interface, more storage, etc. I have a 2019 Shield (non-Pro) and a couple Firestick 4Ks (including a Max) and much prefer the Shield although I do wish they'd update the hardware as it's starting to become long in tooth.

These things are 7 years old at this point. They have the same chip as the Nintendo Switch. There have been quite a few leaks about the chips Nvidia is making for the next Switch lately, and will probably release sometime next year. I imagine the new Shield won't release until after the Switch.

For streaming video it certainly is. Power draw is much less at idle and while streaming, especially important for an always on device. My 2017 Shield never really ticks over 5 watts under any use case. Obviously if gaming or Blu-ray is of any interest it's not worth it.

This is getting long In the tooth, but still my favorite android streaming device. Snappy, powerful, never feel like I'm fighting the hardware like sticks do.

If you want to use only vanilla streaming apps the Apple TV is actually the easiest experience

This shines with all the "jailbreak" apps, ip tv etc

Yes nvidia are scum bag shitheads for putting ads on the home screen, and yes the hardware is old but it was very over-powered at launch, it can decode 4k60 x264 and x265 and all the 10bit HDR stuff right on the SoC.

If you're savvy you can roll back to 8.2.3 which is most people's favorite version as it didn't have ads on home screen as was all around stable for the most people. There's a very active subreddit with tons of guides to tweak this to your liking. Like the other user said, it's android so sky is the limit. It's also extremely handy for, ahem, free HD sports & event streams that may or may not be available through conventional paid means on your area. Lots of ways to skin that cat if you dig around a bit.

If you have your own local content on a NAS this is the defacto standard box you want to stream to via uPnP or SMB, I've tried many other product lines (Minix comes to mind), most of them have never ending firmware updates that never quite squash all bugs and then they get discontinued.

If you just stream crap from Hulu or Netflix or this all sounds like Chinese to you then yes maybe stick with firestick, this is more what you want for streaming & decoding high fidelity content on your local network.
