I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

I know that one of the big features is the AI upscaling but wouldn't the upscaling in a good projector/TV be as good?

Personally I replaced my Shield Pro with the new ATV 4K. Much smoother in operation and no advertisements on the home screen, works great with the Apple eco system/iPhone in general. Better overall streaming box in my opinion. The Shield Pro is laggy unfortunately.

Only feature I'm truly missing is the 4K upscaling feature. You can even use Steam Link and connect a controller easily to the ATV. If you truly need the more hardcore audio codecs, sideloading apps, watch a ton of 1080P content, or want to use it as a file server, the shield pro is likely the better option for you. If none of this matters to you, get the ATV 4K.

The Shield is no longer King, get over it.

Amazon is adding TrueHD and DTS-HD to the 3rd gen Cube, and it has

AV1 support
VP9.2 HDR, and HDR10+ support
WiFi6E
Hands free voice control
30-35% faster CPU
IR blaster
HDMI in
30% cheaper

Why give Nvidia your money for outdated tech? Deprogram yourself, and buy based on specs not on brand loyalty.

Better than the Xbox or playstation? This is the current cost of a Xbox one x which was a ton more horsepower and plays Blu-ray.
I have a xbox one x and a 2017 Nvidia. The interface and the updates are far better on the shield. I had a 2019 but had to return it because of an issue that apparently had been fixed with the latest update. The 2019 has a new AI upscale which is pretty impressive for upscaling 1080 to 4k content. The remote for the xbox is also extra cash as the controller isn't ideal for just scrolling thru multiple streaming services. But if I could only have one the xbox is a better deal I agree.

I've never seen a single ad on any of my Shield devices. And it's a stretch to claim that the single Netflix button on the remote is an ad.

I don't have brand loyalty, I have brand disloyalty. I don't run Amazon hardware in my home. I know Google is no better so let's not go there. Aside from that though, this is all pretty subjective.
  • The Amazon UI is atrocious and there's ads for Arby's and Ford trucks jammed into every other row of icons on the screen.
  • The remote also sucks and has big protruding app shortcut buttons that you'll hit on accident all the time. My LG OLED remote has this and it drives me crazy.
  • Upscaling sucks, the Shield just plain owns the cube here
  • HDMI in is clunky and laggy, useless for connecting a gaming console, some sound syncing issues on other devices
  • USB is Type 2, so playing HD content over an attached hard drive or USB is a no-go, Shield is USB3
  • In practice the WiFi6E underperforms the spec, it's somehow no faster than Shields older hardware
  • Sideloading apps is a bigger PITA than on a normal android device, not as open. Same issues with their Kindle eReaders, mainly why I stray from Amazon
Also is a dumb ugly cube designed to listen to you so you can ask the weather and add broccoli to your shopping list and other dumb shit that grandmothers like. All in all I'd say it's a far cry from "The King," but to each his own.

The shield has plenty of its own problems, the remote also sucks, not as bad as cube IMO but that's subjective. YouTube HDR is a problem for people that watch HDR content, I don't personally know where to even watch HDR stuff on YoutTube, (is this for paid content?). The homescreen also sucks on Shield, but again not as bad as Cube. At the end of the day though it's 10x easier to make modifications and tweaks, sideload, etc on the Shield as it is on any Amazon device, with better side-loading capabilities and more third-party development happening.

So all in all I'd recommend anyone to just go to any devices dedicated sub-reddit and see what users are complaining about there vs solutions before making a purchase decision.

7 years? dude, its 3 years. educate yourself a bit - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvi...19_version
It's the same device and chip as the model released in 2015, but with extra storage and a slightly overclocked GPU. The chip is on a slightly smaller node, but that only helps slightly with power consumption. This hardware is ancient, as far as computer hardware is concerned. The 16nm node these are made on is from 2013. I'm not saying a $200 TV box needs to be manufactured on TSMCs expensive 4nm like Nvidias GPU's, but there's no way these should cost this much when $100 phones have more powerful hardware these days (and cost significantly more to make).

I'm probably the minority but I actually prefer the Google Chromecast TV over the Nvidia Shield. Been using both extensively and as a streamer I have less glitches with the Google box. I have a series X with game pass, and never used the shield for gaming purposes so can't comment on those features.

In my experience the upscalers in TVs and projectors is pretty mediocre at best, they just use a simple algorithm that averages the color & luminosity values of nearby pixels and sticks them in there to get from 1080p to 4k, whereas Nvidia uses more advanced AI stuff that can use broader pattern recognition in larger area of the image, and adjacent frames, so on, to predicatively produce new image data that wasn't there before. This is similar tech to what Nvidia is using in their graphics cards to make games look better than expected with less raw rendering needing to happen on the hardware to do so.

The reddit thread linked seems negative about the 3rd gen Cube. Is there confirmation the issues are fixed?

I'm on a Shield since 2015, and my current model is the 2017. From my experience with older generation Amazon tech, the ads were intrusive and heavily pushed Amazon content. I also disliked the closed environment Amazon created, I prefer native Google Assistant compatibility.

Fully appreciate the tech is superior (if it works), but I prefer the Shield's interface and compatibility. I'm debating an upgrade, and wonder if Amazon improved in these areas. Please let me know your experience.

All Android boxes have ads, use a custom launcher.

Why would you run a game console through the Cube anyway?!? That's not what the HDMI port is for. This is how to get minimum lag 101.

USB2 is 480Mbps, more than 3x bandwidth than any UHD movies that exist. I can stream UHD Blu-rays on USB2 on devices slower than the 3rd gen Cube easy already.

WiFi6E underperforms but is still faster than what you get from the Shield.

Sideloading is a pain in the ass? FFS use send to tv, or any of the other half dozen apps that let you install apps remotely from a phone.

These are just a bunch of crap excuses for Shield owners to keep telling themselves that they have the best device.

It use to be the Shield is the fastest, now it's slower than the AppleTV, 3rd gen Cube and even the 2nd gen Cube because of the last buggy Shield Android update.

Then it was, but the Shield is the only one that can do lossless audio, well now the 3rd gen Cube will do that and VP9.2, HDR10+and AV1.

Next thing Shield shills will be saying 'but it's the best for games', give me a break! The Shield is OLD, if you want to game get a real console.

I understand if you already own a Shield the 3rd gen Cube might not be worth the upgrade, but if you are looking to buy a new streaming device it's just foolish to pay more and get less with the Shield.

Yeah the 3rd gen Cube has bugs now, it's NEW, not recycled hardware from 2015.
