I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

Amazing set up for IPTV. Still rocking the 2015 version and use it everyday with Zero lag . Also have the latest android version. Hate the google ads, but it's not nvidia's fault given this is vanilla android tv and it was forced on nvidia without any choice . Otherwise they could not upgrade to the next version

Apple TV will likely be a much more polished experience, with nearly every app running smoother and having just a better all around UI/UX than either the Shield or other devices discussed here. If you like the voice stuff Siri likely works better than OKGoogle or Alexa. Also content framerate matching is best in class, which is to say it actually works. This is a big issue on Shield and others (making the device automatically switch to output a framerate to your display that is native to the media being played, eg 24p, 30p, 60p, rather than having to change it manually).

The trade-off is just the age-old android vs apple argument, in exchange for plug-and-play polish it is very difficult, if at all possible, to sideload apps, make UI and system tweaks, or do anything Apple doesn't explicitly intend to do. So very much depends on what you want to use it for.

FLauncher is my favorite, free and open-source yet looks very clean and minimal.

I'm currently selling my 2019 Shield Pro and would happily take $125. Comes with everything and the box.

I've found there's not much need for this for my usage. I don't use PLEX or anything like that and have just upgraded to the A80K which has everything I want built in

Edit: You all can stop trying to low ball me in my DMs now. It is sold

Because this can do a lot more, if you're inclined to set it up.

KODI. Iptv. Syncler.

It is a plex server with transcoding capabilities.

Google play store with infinite apps vs apple store with a very walled garden.

Nothing like paying 180 bucks to deal with ads on the home screen and on your remote 😐
I've been thinking of getting one due to appletv playback issues. Is there a workaround to being served ads on this thing?

There is a problem though, namely playback of local media movies isn't going well at all.

The Shield is no longer King, get over it.

Amazon is adding TrueHD and DTS-HD to the 3rd gen Cube, and it has

AV1 support
VP9.2 HDR, and HDR10+ support
WiFi6E
Hands free voice control
30-35% faster CPU
IR blaster
HDMI in
30% cheaper

Why give Nvidia your money for outdated tech? Deprogram yourself, and buy based on specs not on brand loyalty.

Most people that use a shield are pro A/V users and usually don't care about the lack of YouTube HDR or upcoming (not even mainstream) streaming codecs, streaming at variable bitrates is trash imo. I run a dedicated 50tb Plex server and only feed the shield uncompressed remux 4k blurays with uncompressed Atmos metadata. The shield doesn't hesitate in the slightest. It pases all the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ video and DTS/Dolby codecs to my Denon receiver without issue. It's free of a lot of bloatware and telemetry trash that Amazon loads into it's devices. To top it off Nvidia still supports even their oldest shield player with regular software updates. I've tried numerous streaming devices over the years, even running a dedicated HTPC, the shield being able to handle uncompressed streams solidifies it as the current best device. If you don't care about video quality or audio quality, an apple tv or built in TV apps will do just fine.

I thought there was a new version in the works. Not that this is not a good unit, but I would wait for the new version considering it's only $25 savings

I'm right there with you. I have a 36tb nas raid 6 running now. The shield plays anything I thow at it. The one issues I've had is with 3d. I have a popcorn player that I use for that. Do you use 3d with yours?

It is a matter of personal preference on the GUI, but these Amazon Fire, ONN, Tivo4k and the Shield are android os.. All of them. The difference for me is I cant stand 8gb. That is why I have gone to cubes only. I wasted enough time on adoptable storage. It is a PIA.. I can live with the cubes 16gb.

I also have been dabbling in with Raspberry pi 4 and Konstakang Android development. I can make that pi 4 into a current os android, 2 HDMI 4USB ports, ethernet and wifi. I have 256gb Micro SD in there and I never have to worry about running out. For the most part it is stable.

ETA Prime and Explaining Computers (You Tube) has been showcasing Some beefy PI sized devices that have more (emc,NVME, as well as Micro sd) faster storage options and are all modern processors. Most are far cheaper than this.

For the reasons I find most important , I would opt for a cube because of its RAM. For the reasons most want the shield, I come down on the side that it is to old, and would explore other android options.

When these first came out I was really excited, but I could not justify the price, I still can't. At $100 I might want to look at the idea again, but the $175 has been the lowest price for years.

I am not including apple in my thinking because I am not a apple person. I don't like the eco system. I feel for the most part the prices of Apple products are not price competitive and there is a certain amount of snob appeal not to mention the Locked OS..
