I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

FINALLY Android TV gets the Directv Stream app. Working good on my Sony TV and Old Shield. Too bad they are raising prices again.

Reluctantly in for one because it would be my luck that Nvidia makes an announcement for a new model (finally).
I've been wanting to upgrade my 2015 model, but I'm not giving in. There gotta be a 2023 model around the corner. Big Grin

I just did a search to see the difference between the 2017 and 2019/current Shield models. One comparison basically says the new Shields have (1) a 25% faster processor and (2) better remote and they can do (3) Dolby Vision. I can't say for sure if I've played Dolby Vision on my 2017 Shield, but I know 4K, HDR10, Dolby Atmos and all the other formats play just fine. Other than these 3 things, do the newer Shields do anything else the 2017 doesn't?
I believe they introduced the AI upscaling in the 2019 model as well.

I agree it's the best from a 'convenience,' retail standpoint regarding it's staying power for all these years, but after delving into the world of SBCs (single-board computers, e.g., Raspberry Pi), I highly disagree it's the most economic and affordable option. I say this b/c I purchased a
NVIDIA Jetson Nano 2GB Dev Kit SBC back on 11/1/2021 from Amazon for $59 before it eventually sold out which was no longer than 2 weeks later, and I also purchased a "GeeekPi DeskPi Nano Case" from Amazon to fit it in which costed $39.99 at the time. The Jetson Nano does require microSD storage to install software on it so I used a Samsung branded 256GB microSD ($24.99). The Jetson Nano is a similarly specced device when compared to a Shield. The Nano was recommended on one of ETA Prime's YT videos which encouraged me to buy one, but my intent was to install Android TV 10 on it (for content consumption, gaming and emulation) which I did by following this guide here [lineageos.org]. The one advantage the Shield has in my case is native remote control support and that it contains its own internal storage (which isn't much to brag a/b), but on the Jetson Nano you're capable of dictating its internal storage capacity according to the microSD card you use and you can use an air mouse or an Android TV remote app in place of a remote, and to take it a step further, the Nano has an additional USB port compared to the Shield. Yeah, you could say everything I've mentioned so far may sound like a bunch of hurdles, but the point I'm trying to make is that NVIDIA could do a lot better in its pricing and improving the specs over time. Case in point, I recently watched another one of ETA Prime's YT videos [youtube.com] again where he was touting a/b another SBC, the Orange Pi 5, and when I say it's a beast on Android 12, it puts my Nano and the Shield to shame.
S/N: I bought myself an Orange Pi 5 that same day for $91 in total when you account for taxes, shipping and the $12 discount using promo code "USNEW12" for being a first-time buyer 😁.

Can someone tell me if this will be better than a MAG box for running a MAC based IPTV service? Issue I have with firestick is lack of remote control that enables me to type, fast forward, use search function etc.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that Nvidia has recently announced they are planning to remove some functionality with the device early 2023.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/gefo...ce-update/

As a Nvidia shield user with 2015 and 2019 shield pro devices this is disappointing news and seems like this will be the last shield device they put out.

7 years? dude, its 3 years. educate yourself a bit - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvi...19_version [wikipedia.org]

The 2019 version is nearly the same thing as the 2015 version. Its the same chip with a die shrink and clock boost. It has the up scaling added in while removing IR and microSD. Its still more or less the same platform.

Yeah I have always praised nvidia for this product for still updating it 7 years later. I also never had any issues with the firmware updates. That really sucks though that they are removing nvidia gamestream.... I guess it doesnt generate any profits for them and they rather redirect you to the paid cloud streaming platform. I dont even use it but it did have the lowest latencies compared to all other in house game streaming technologies, probably having to do with nvidia team having full access to their proprietary code and being able to better optimize it compared to other solutions.

You're paying with your time to research and set it all up. So its basically a wash money wise, its more if you want to tinker around and all that. For me it depends, sometimes I want to tinker but more and more I want something to "just work". I almost got the 5800x3d and was reading about undervolting it to lower temps and all that jazz then thought who am I kidding I barely even game anymore, I should just get the 65w 5700x and be done with it.

I would already own one of these if I wouldn't have to go back to a 2015 or 2017 model to get the 500gb version...

Was so pissed at them for 'neutering' the 2019 versions, storage-wise.

But will 2023 finally be 'the year' we see nVidia release a new/upgraded unit?

They were on an 'every two years' (i.e. every odd-numbered year) update path, prior to the pandemic.

I was actually fairly optimistic about the prospects for a new/upgraded model, at least until I learned about the Nintendo contract...

I have two of these and they're great. They play 4k plex content without transcode better than any other device that runs plex.

Another tip - they do use proprietary power adapters. I lost one of mine and contacted Nvidia support. They provided me a new power supply totally free of charge and arrived overnight from FedEx. Def nice

Can this sbc be programmed to have the same feature as the shield? AI upscaling, audio codec, plex server, etc.
