Dude...it's basically a novelty and few select uses.

It's not meant to replace your entire house bulbs lol. Chill.

Get some perspective, my friend.

First of all, smart speakers and smart bulbs CAN be useful. In fact, I use them every single day, but I won't bore you with how I use them.

Second, who do you think you are, the CEO of a major high tech company or the president of a significant country? Do you really think your privacy is that important? Assuming you aren't doing anything illegal, how interesting do you think your life is? How highly do you think of yourself?

Lastly, major companies and governments have unfathomable amounts of power, influence and money at their disposal. If they truly wanted to "invade your privacy", they won't require your consensus. Besides, there are PLENTY of ways that your privacy is ALREADY "invaded" without ever having to install a smart device in your home.

The sooner you relinquish the illusion that this life is everything and that you had any form of control in the first place, the sooner you will be free to actually live your life.

Let's review some of the possible failure points -- assuming I have GOOD power (no outage) and the Echo+bulb are in normal working order (no hardware faults):

- Echo device has a connectivity issue to Amazon's servers
- Amazon's servers are down (can't process my voice or pass along commands)
- Bulb has connectivity issue to their servers
- Amazon cannot contact the bulb's servers, as it's an intermediary
- Any number of consumer networking device issues (router, switch, etc)
- Issue with one's ISP (high latency, outage, etc)
- You better hope the bulb manufacturer didn't forget to update their Amazon APIs....or just outright shut down their servers because they went out of business. Your bulb is now a paperweight!

....all of which can be avoided with a normal lightbulb and a switch, for a fraction of the cost of this entire enterprise.

Oh, you'll have to content with Amazon asking "by the way..." to boost their device engagement numbers. And all the privacy concerns of it possibly listening in onto your private home life.

And many 3rd party bulbs can only be setup using the bulb manufacture's mobile application -- mining your mobile data for resale. You're not the customer - you're the product. And if that bulb company is based in China, then your data is directly accessibly by the good ol' CCP - by their law.

Don't get suckered in by cheap cloud solutions. If you truly want remote control options, search for private cloud or non-cloud options. It'll cost more, but you get what you pay for....privacy and a guarantee it'll work.

I actually have a number of these through prior deals and don't view as a novelty. I understand privacy concerns and all and don't criticize anyone on that point, but these echos and the bulbs are darn convent (for me) and the cost of point of entry here is very reasonable IMO. Great deal.

Smart bulbs are awesome to use in lamps that aren't needed for every day use. Why? Well, mood lighting of course. And let's us schedule them to go on/off during vacations (so it looks like someone's home). I don't think I'd ever really want all of our home in smart bulbs as it's so much easier to have a switch or motion sensor turn lights on when you enter a room, but the ability to dim lighting as the night hits so you can avoid harsh light and help prepare your body for bed is a nice option too. Of course, excellent gifts for teens. We gave each teen in the family a smart bulb last year and called them friendship bulbs. They all got on a smart home together and got to make a color chart and change each other's light bulbs with different colors to say things like 'I love you' or 'emergency meeting needed'. So cute to be chilling in the room and have the bulb change colors and get the warm fuzzies for them!

"novelty"
šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

There isn't a room in my house that doesn't have an Alexa and/or smart light/device.

My wife hated X10, still fights Alexa/google/smart devices being added.
She only has a dot in her office, for listening to music.

Yes, Hue White bulb. Really depends on if you just need for light and adding to an existing Hue setup, or if you want the color bulb.
