i find i have to change batteries (with duracell or enegizer) about 1 maybe 2 times a year
this is used daily though, 4 people in household

Typically, people run into connection/wifi/bt issues with all these locks (August, Wyze etc). And that's to be expected with BT/Wifi. Maybe Matter/Thread will probably solve these issues.
Rechargeable batteries and low battery notifications. Most of the AA rechargeable batteries are 1.2V while the regular ones are 1.5V. That's the reason you'll get low battery notifications with the rechargeable ones. The lock will measure the battery volts to estimate the energy consumption.
As for the hardware itself, I've been checking the reviews and there's quite a few August locks with broken plastic parts (check amazon). Current August locks seem pretty fragile. Previous August generations had more metal parts inside than Gen3/Wifi. Wyze seems a bit more simple. Check the FCC links. Not sure about the software though.

Never buying from them again.
When I have an apartment vacant, for showings , I buzz potential tenants in to the "empty apartment" remotely from my home 1000 miles away. I have them text/call me when they are ready to leave so I can remotely lock the door behind them. The entire time I can see them to screen them from my Wyze camera which is really close by. When I choose a tenant my handyman runs over and pulls the front keypad off the lock and replaces it with the existing lock that was already installed!
Never had an issue with batteries but this lock doesnt get the use of a family of 4 who live there full time.

Biggest issue I have with it is that the auto unlock is not exactly snappy. It takes a while for it to figure out that I'm in the vicinity.
and we have sonars throughout the perimeters. we know who's there before they even touch the door.
The August was a nightmare with my wifi and their tech support was useless. I eventually got it connected by splitting up my wifi, turning one into the simplest of SSID names and 2.4 GHz required (tech support wanted me to go buy an OLD router that worked with August, lmao), but even with that, it would still drop connection and prove unreliable. Lastly, visitors would come over and be completely confused as to how the August unlocks.
Wyze was an easy setup, no wifi issues, easy install, keypad works great, works with Google home (and Alexa according to them, but can't verify that), and it looks like a dead bolt that everyone knows how to use.
In retrospect, the August is kind of a fire hazard if someone has never seen it before.
