Usually gaming is better with headphones of some sort (for everyone involved). Usually soundbars are more geared towards shows/movies. With that said, it can be used for gaming, as long as others are ok with the noise, and that's what the gamer wants.

JBL Quantum 300s are a great budget headset that do a decent job at software surround sound but run small making them perfect for a kid

Just make sure to connect via USB and download the JBL software.

Can be found for around $30 these days making them actually worth a pickup
(when they were $70 they felt too cheap for that price point)
