Is it possible to mod this type of system for a much larger format?

i have the same question. I bought the smaller version with the High power laser via a previous deal as a Christmas present with the intention of buying a longer aluminum section to make the X? axis longer.

i would think its as easy as putting a longer section in with a new belt and changing some settings in the program similar to a 3d printer slicer.

This is my understanding of it from going through a ton of info looking into getting my own. (on the way) Short focus works better with detail work, like burning images but not cutting. Cutting works better with long focus where the focus tapers gradually. In doing so the useful spot size is longer before the focal point and after the focal point. People try to adjust the focal point so it is in the middle thickness of the material being cut. This seems to be more of an issue if your laser output power is 10w or above. 5w or below the lasers are more limited to engraving only where spot size still matters (smaller the better) but not so much long focus or short focus. Either way long focus seems to be a generally better choice. But, again, this is just from my reading and not from personal experience so take it with a grain of salt. Good luck.

Many laser engraver manufacturers sell expansion kits to increase the working area of their units. Sculpfun sells a kit that increases from around 410mm x 410mm to 410mm x 950mm and even a 950mm x 950mm expansion.

As a suggestion, if you can, get air assist before you even begin to use the laser. Cutting/burning produces a lot of smoke that deposits soot around where the laser is burning and this includes the glass on the laser head itself. This soot quickly causes the laser to loose power (cut less effectively) and the glass to heat up because the soot deposited on it turns the glass less and less transparent eventually causing it to overheat and break. Air assist puts a hood around the glass where the laser exists and air is pumped into this hood/nozzle. This keeps the smoke/soot/deposits away from the laser head glass and keeps it clean. Without air assist, it would be a good idea to clean the laser head often to keep soot deposit low.

Seems like a small pump and some tubing would do the job, not knowing how expensive the official add on is.

This may or may not fit, there are several styles of laser heads but they all put the laser head in an enclosed area and the air is ejected down along the path of the laser. https://www.ebay.com/itm/22517129...R5y-k-ihYQ

Eliminating fouling of the laser head isn't the only benefit of air assist, it also keeps soot down on the work piece so masking isn't needed most of the time. Also, it reduces flame flare up and even reduces charring as the air flow quickly cools down the part the laser just burned. The benefits are substantial. The link above is for one that attaches to a comgrow z1, it may or may not fit your particular one you'll have to do your research. But the air pump that that one comes with is from a larger aquarium unit, don't go any smaller than that one. Even the "official" air assist kits that come with smaller air pumps improve dramatically when an adequately sized air pump is used like that one in this kit. Some people actually use an air compressor reduced to 20psi to use in their laser engravers.

Laser engraves are really no joke, set it up and use it wrong and you'll set even wood on fire. The worst setting for fires is full power running really slow like trying to cut through thick material. Thin materials or fibrous materials can catch fire easy too. Air assist reduces (not eliminate) the chance for flareups by a lot. The laser engraver itself is only one cost..... the first time you use it you'll understand why other people buy enclosures to catch all the smoke and pipe it outside. Laser engraving has a learning and cost curve to it. Make a mistake and you could burn your house down, inhale a lot of smoke, poisonous smoke, or get eye/skin damage from an errant laser light. Not trying to scare you, but just be aware of the less than fun aspects of laser engraving. There is a solid reason ALL laser engravers come with those protective glasses (use it) and why Co2 lasers come in completely enclosed cabinets that shuts down laser if it gets opened during operation. Laser that will cut through paper and wood will burn out your retina way before you even begin to blink.

small pump and some tubing will be an improvement over no air assist at all, but consider one with a proper hood and an adequate air pump the performance will be night and day.;

Disclaimer: Laser engraver can poison with fumes and blind anyone around it. It's not a toy or 3d printer (though printing with some plastics is hazardous too)

Hmmm - claims they can't ship to my location. :/

Edit: The ortur.net site has it for $240 that can get knocked down a little more with coupon codes. But the retail price is listed at $270 and not $499. So it's not quite the deal that the original post would have you believe. Still, $200 seems fine for this if you can get it shipped.

You can probably even get the Ortur Laser Master 2 now for this price ($499.99), which is the better machine.

Thanks for the insight!

Seeing as how you know a lot more than most of us here, how (or should I ask do) these engrave on curved surfaces? I see one sample image of a glass with engraving on it, but I don't understand how it rotates the item. It surely can't be rotated manually. I'm specifically looking to engrave pool cues.

Based on your comment, short/long focus won't matter for my use case, and these are acceptable since they are 4.5w-5.5w?
