If you plan on having more kids in the future, just buy the real deal. They're expensive but after 2 or 3 kids play with them, it's well worth it.

As for feel, Duplo cannot be beat. My kid started playing with them at around 10 months with the animals during bath time. It's been over 18 months and they're played with daily for hours.
My kid's fine motor skills and creativity are as good as they are because of all the duplo play (can pickup single kernels of corn with training chopsticks).
I suggest avoiding sets with instructions. You'll build it with them once and that's that, all the parts will get mixed into the bin never to be built again.
Vehicles are good and easy to keep track of. I scored a bunch of expensive vehicles for next to nothing on fb marketplace, offerup, and Craigslist. Find the stale ads and make an offer for the bigger lots.
