I enjoyed reading your reasonable notes, though it does sound like you've been spoiled by some of the best Fluke has to offer so don't be too hard on the mere 117 (the 87V could be the mountaintop of Fluke multimeters, so tossing the beast that is the 289 into the mix is almost creating an unfair comparison!). I also agree with your suggestions regarding the wide selection of reasonable, reputable models and brands at various price points while still acknowledging a place for low-cost, borderline give-away meters.

A lot of the drama around Fluke seems to me to be around existential questions (what is a Fluke?). These often come up based upon the way the market has changed over time. Fluke is a brand tightly tied to safety, which is certainly a factor for buyers making a living off their multimeter since staying alive is a key part of the equation. However, something Fluke does to service the institutional market which doesn't always present an obvious value to the retail buyer is that they've maintained stability in their products/models over time to allow corporate and government buyers to build standards around their meters. Additionally, Fluke's market differentiators has historically incorporated a couple of other noteworthy features:

Lifetime warranty
Made in USA

Fluke unsurprisingly manufactures the bottom end of their 100-series in China. Similarly, they've restricted warranties on these to as little as one year. At the same time, Fluke doesn't fail to build into these units the basic safety considerations which are hallmarks of their products.

So is a Fluke 107 still a Fluke? For some of those for whom safety might be a primary concern and the price point isn't, this model of Fluke has merit. Others might justifiably argue against paying Fluke prices if you aren't even getting Fluke mainstay features like the two additional bullets I laid out above. The good news for everyone is that there are plenty of valid choices assuming trade-offs are taken into consideration.

Good luck!

How does this compare to the pile of free multimeters I collected over the years from HF?

Amazon reviews don't get much better. Still, less would do just as well for most people.

BTW anyone familiar with the OWON handheld oscilloscopes [amazon.com]? I'm very tempted to get one of those.

Not a True RMS multimeter. You'll want to pass on this one.

This is good and will be acceptable for most people but if you are really serious about your electronics you'll hold out for one built by Fluke.

Great meter. I bought it for around a $100 and I wish I had bought it before. Cheapest and best Fluke model with mostly everything you need, all the basic regular measurements/ Also another good thing, it uses 2 AAA batts so you can use Eneloop rechargeable or whatever. I feel its very accurate.
Two slight annoyances: (1) Viewing angle could have been better. I would estimate its visible from 60 degrees to 80 and anything outside of that, it gets dimmer. That 80 should have been 110 or 120. (2) I added two rubber pads at the bottom so it doesn't slip around (I dont use its case). The backlight is very nice.
Oh and the cables are very thick and occupy a lot of volume. I replaced them with cheap cables which still work well. I dont take any high current measurements. Love the small size of this meter too. All other Fluke meters (except for one or two other models which are the same size) are big.
And I dont think anyone here who says this is cheap chinese stuff can back up their claims. This is a real authentic Fluke meter and I believe its being sold by Fluke. When you get it you'll see the quality. Lots of people here arent familiar with Fluke. The whole corporate world uses Fluke because of their quality.
