Most people don't need true rms
Until you check the output of something that isn't a standard AC waveform and you get an inaccurate measurement with no idea it could be wrong. AC inverters (e.g. 120V outlets in cars), dimmers, UPS outputs, motors, anything solid state, HVAC equipment, and much more.

If you're only ever going to measure AC out of the wall at a house, an averaging meter is fine but most people will have no idea that its limited to just that and when they need to measure something that might not be a true AC waveform and won't even know their reading is wrong.

At that point, just get a cheapie meter, not one that is close to $100.

If you're unsure whether paying a premium for a Fluke multimeter is worth it to you, watch this video [youtube.com].

Any thought on this one? Seems like a decent feature meters albeit a little over price comparing to my 30 years old $20 (missing diode and auto voltage measurement). But everything else seem to have a big price jump.

How does this compare to the pile of free multimeters I collected over the years from HF?

Well your pile of inaccurate chinese multimeters doesn't compare to this Fluke. Hopefully that answers your question

Not a True RMS multimeter. You'll want to pass on this one.
Less than 1% of users will need the accuracy of a true RMS meter. It's only applicable in critical fields such as Aerospace, Aviation and nuclear fields

This looks the same as 20-30 years ago. Any modern smart meters around?
Maybe you want to consider some interesting review videos from trusted electronics engineers like these (well, at least for me).

A very good explanation of why FLUKE multimeters are expensive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a...19Y&t=898s

I have one cheap but reviewed as a very good cheap multimeter ANENG AN8008. But all of us need to research based on our own needs.

Note: True RMS is very helpful for electricians (more relevant) but NOT for us (electronics) that manage low voltage signals 99% of the time.

Yes I do. And I have two used Fluke meter made in USA bought for around $90.

Good used made in USA stuff is much better than new cheapo crap made in Communist China: back then when we make stuff domestically, people didn't figure out how to cut corners aggressively. With relatively simple tech, at the same price, you get more robust and reliable product with proven track record (at least a decade of field testing, if there's a noticeable flaw, most people would have known about it) with buying used or old new stock.

Nonetheless, buying products made under Fluke's name is for the right to sue Fluke if things went horribly wrong. There's little you can get from suing white labels or cheap brands in China.

the fact that you keep referring them to "communists" in a derogatory manner tells me all I need to know.
How is that derogatory? It's written in their 'constitution' and they are proud of it.

RMS to DC converter ICs starts at $5 a pop. That's why True RMS meters sells at a premium. Multiplication isn't a trivial operation in the analog world. It's more power draw and complexity if they designed in a microcontroller to do the ADC and real time squaring so if the infrastructure isn't needed for something else already, they wouldn't go this route.

Basically for a project that's doesn't care about being off by 100mV or less and doesn't work with high voltages that can injure, this Fluke meter doesn't add much value to what a $20 multimeter already does. As some others have mentioned, electricians are better off with fluke.

You can be off by 40% with a non true RMS meter and it can push you completely in the wrong direction when troubleshooting. If you're measuring AC on electronics, you very likely will need a true RMS meter. Many electricians (especially electricians who work on residential) don't even need True RMS.

This meter just isn't slotted in a good position -- if this is your price point, get a Klein, Extech, Greenlee, etc True RMS meter at this price point. If you use DMMs on a regular basis, you'll likely have a much more expensive Fluke.
