XPA-9 Gen3 9 Channel Audiophile Home Theater Power Amplifier - $1759

Didn't see this posted, if it has sorry about that.

Emotiva extended their 10% off of $100(WINTER10)/20% off of $1,999(SNOW20) deal.

If someone is looking for an external amplifier to drive a 9 channel setup their XPA-9 amp comes out to $1759 before taxes.
The configuration for this is:
5 X 300 high powered single-channel Modules
2 X 65 stereo Modules

Emotiva makes some pretty good amps and this would be plenty powerful for most setups.

Figured I would bring this to light in case someone was in the market and pointing out a good deal IMO.

Emotiva measures from mediocre to just plain bad. But don't worry, you get to overpay for the poor performance.

Distortion, timing errors, and jitter: oh my!

There is no magic in sound reproduction, but there are a lot of ripoffs.
Timing errors and jitter in an amplifier?

That's the magic of defining the "performance" of sound reproduction based on reading, it's the only way he could point that out!

Can you point to some decent alternatives? How are the Monoprice amps?

Monoprice is pretty hit and miss, but their prices are nice. How many channels do you need and how many watts per channel? Balanced inputs or not? Do you just want the amplifier, or do you want AVR electronics as well?

Unless you need huge power, I'd look for something with Purifi or Hypex NC innards and that doesn't have a bunch of changes from the reference designs. March Audio uses Purifi. NAD and Marantz use Hypex. If you want BIG power, there's always used Crown I-Tech on ebay. If you don't really care that much about performance and don't need much power, I'm sure Emotiva will be fine, but you may as well just get an AVR then. Behringer and Crown make some cheap, powerful amps in stereo, and some that go well beyond.

I've got 11 speakers with an old Onkyo TX1010 which powers 7 channels, I was thinking to power my LCR with the dedicated amp and the rest to be handled by the AVR.

If you just need three channels of amplification, it's a matter of budget and power needs. There's not much point in spending 3 grand on amps when you don't need the power or the speakers aren't that good to begin with. Still a lot of unknowns. If your LCR are all Revel high end stuff or similar, it'd totally be worth it to spend on a stereo and a mono from March or similar. If you've got something more basic, then maybe you should plan on where you want to go overall and why. I mean, it's fun to throw money at a stereo, but that doesn't necessarily improve the sound. You could just be throwing the money away.

Sorry, Klipsch RF-82II sides, RP-504C center, nothing fancy.

The rest are Klipsch RP-500SA for Atmos, Klipsch RP-502S surrounds.

Thanks for your help!

Not amazingly low distortion, but a good value. Just look up the measurements from third parties. Amps are signal in, bigger signal out, preferably without too much added noise, distortion, or unevenness in frequency response. The irritating thing is that companies might make one great product and another terrible one. A company like Samsung/Harman/JBL spans so many markets, they do just that. Even a brand like Revel is going to have absolute diamonds and then some products that are just good.

I think that with those speakers, you could get a benefit if your current amp is underpowered for the amount of volume you want, like if the amp is clipping. However, you are not going to get your money's worth by buying expensive amps for those speakers. The frequency response, directionality, and distortion of those Klipsch is likely not so hot. I know that center channel is going to have a tiny sweet spot where the sound is good, and beyond that, the frequency response becomes a mess. Better to start by upgrading the speakers.

Fair enough, thanks!
