I specifically mentioned good looking cards as they were shopping for their kid. I intentionally left off talking anything about return on value. The odds of getting a "hit card" is higher in these sets as celebrations gives you a lot of foils with a VMAX pika about 1:4 packs. Give me one other modern set that you can get a VMAX on average better than 1:8 let alone 1:4
Got to pay attention to the request from the original poster. "My daughter got into Pokemon recently...." This clearly does not say "could you tell me which set has the most expensive cards".
I am giving them an answer to their question. You are trying to answer someone else's question

Which pack that has high change to get Holo like VSTAR or VMAX ? My daughter into Pokemon lately and I don't have any clue how to get Holo beside ebay.
In the future starting with scarlet violet there are 3 guaranteed holo cards in each pack. I know that doesn't help now but something to consider.

And just IMO on limited testing, celebrations are weighable so if you want to give a kids packs to open and get the Pikachu VMAX/Vs + Zacian/Zamansetas, you can give them packs weighing 9.72-9.74g (with shiny foil outside). Then chasing Charizard/Venusaur at 9.66-9.68g (shiny foil outside) and other classics at 10.04-10.09g (grey foil outside). Getting the packs for $3-4 is good value like from the Walmart SylveonV packs past few weeks.

100% false.

Shining fates currently only has 2 cards in total that are worth $10 or more, the Charizard VMAX is the only chase card from this set.

Of the newer sets, your best bet is evolving skies (36/297 are $10+), then probably Brilliant Stars (22/224 are $10+)

That said, your "odds" of pulling them are essentially the same across the sets, no one expansion has a better pull rate than the others.
It's like a race to the bottom on these Shining Fates bundles on eBay right now lol - appears a lot of undercutting: https://www.ebay.com/itm/334391760158?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D777008%26algo%3DPERSONAL.TOPI... [ebay.com]

Just my opinion...why can't it all just be like the old days? First edition and rare cards? I miss the simpler days lol.

If you want the joy of opening packs for the surprise buy some packs! Collecting can be fun.

But if you want specific cards, including rates, holos, etc, especially if looking to build specific decks) check out tcgplayer.com - probably better than eBay for finding what you want.

I do both for my son: opening packs is fun but also buy specific cards for a deck so we can play.

My 4 year old son has been really into pokemon recently and I've been thinking of getting him some packs to open for Christmas. Since I'm absolutely clueless on all the different packs and what rare cards are worth, is there anything I need to keep an eye out for so I don't live a life of regret if he destroys it? 🤣

Yes, just remember it is against one item only for the $5 pu, so you cannot get 2 packs for $5 off

Opening packs is like scratching lottery tickets, chances of getting something that's worth more than the value of the packs is very slim. If you want the thrill of possibly getting something, then go ahead and but don't be upset if you don't pull anything. If you want a particular card from a set, just buy it as a single, it's much MUCH cheaper that way. I don't open packs anymore unless I need the bulk for a master set.
So I'm really just getting my niece addicted to gambling by giving her packs? Applause
Her and her Dad have this great ritual for opening them and looking at what they got. When I was that age, I just ripped them open as fast as possible. Of course back then it was only sports cards, wacky packages, or the partridge family. MTG was still over 20 years away Wink

Peace
