It's sad that Chase just copies the categories from Discover. I think that's the reason Discover stopped disclosing the categories for the entire year in advance.
I have both the cards and I hate to see overlapping categories. With overlapping categories, I always choose paying with Discover, because there is always a bonus when redeeming points for gift cards.
This is only for the freedom and freedom flex cards. Please update the description OP
Doesn't work for freedom unlimited. Only the Freedom Flex and Freedom get these offers

Good call. Too bad they overlap in their categories this time. It's always nice when grocery 5% is spread across half a year instead of only a quarter (although of course you could stretch that by buying grocery gift cards near the end of the period, but I often forget).
Garbage quarter. I already have Redcard and shop at Sam's. I rarely visit Walmart. As for gyms, Planet Fitness forces you to use checking account.
Oh well.
True, but if you have a sapphire card and use your Freedom (or Flex) card you can convert those into Ultimate Rewards points. Some may prefer the flat 5% savings at Target, but others can get more value if they have the right Chase cards.
The overlap with Discover in groceries is unfortunate. Plus, the Citi Custom Cash is my dedicated 5% grocery card anyway.
My Discover is going to go unused this coming quarter, and I'll use the Citi for dining instead.
I have the same sentiments as you and in the same scenario. At least the Citi can be used for other categories in that span of time.. quite an interesting card actually.
