It's sad that Chase just copies the categories from Discover. I think that's the reason Discover stopped disclosing the categories for the entire year in advance.
I have both the cards and I hate to see overlapping categories. With overlapping categories, I always choose paying with Discover, because there is always a bonus when redeeming points for gift cards.
This is only for the freedom and freedom flex cards. Please update the description OP
Doesn't work for freedom unlimited. Only the Freedom Flex and Freedom get these offers

I think what he means is if you use your CC you get 5% back from chase, and 1% from Target. Using your Target card, you don't get that extra 1% back from Target.
Does buying the grocery store GCs always work to get the 5%?
Or does it depend on which grocery stores and how they code GC purchases?
I'm fairly certain it works at Kroger. Don't know about other stores. As long as it is charged by the same store account that charges you for groceries then I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Is there an easy way to see how much I've spent towards the max $1500 5% cash back, or do I need to add up all of my grocery transactions individually? I want to buy a grocery store gift card for the remainder of the 5% I'm eligible for.

Yes, from the desktop or the mobile app. Go to Redeem then go to Ultimate Rewards, then go to the 5% Cash Back section. It shows you how much cash back you have already earned. You will have to do a little math to figure out how much more you can spend to earn the remaining cash back.
