If you don't need a "smart" EVSE the Grizzl-E 40A/10kW model (in all colors) is on sale now for $350 (though you need to pay shipping). Made in Canada, UL Certified, IP67 rated for outdoor installations.

This seems like a bad deal compared to at least two other options currently on Slickdeals, or even everyday prices on some competitors. I bought a 40A charger three years ago for $150 less than this and have had no complaints. I would understand if there was a significant build quality or durability advantage, but I doubt it--mine is still like-new despite being left fully exposed outdoors through some *rough* weather.

I'm also not sure I understand the advantage of syncing your charging data with one particular brand of public charging network data. Who is willing to pay $100 more than the more-powerful Tesla option for that?

Unless you're on a variable rate plan and need to schedule charging, and/or a geek who for whatever reason needs to check charging stats on a phone, any ~$200 'dumb' L2 charger will satisfy 99% of your EV charging needs.

Cord length is more important (every inch... I mean, foot matters!), and no need to pursue 40A+ if your EV cannot accept more than 32A.

Speaking from 5+ years of experience.

But doesn't that require a hardwired connection? Isn't something connected to a Nema 14-50 plug more flexible? I'm new to all this.

If you have 60A circuit (required for 48A models), then you can't use NEMA 14-50 anyways. ALL chargers that is 48A (or higher) will have to be hard wired.

Now, if you DO get portable charger which you plan to lug around, then yes, get 40A one with plug which will plug into 14-50 outlet but I personally do not lug around chargers so it is moot point - in last year, I NEVER unplugged my charger from the socket.
