Come experience the national parks! On five days in 2023, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. Mark your calendar for these entrance fee–free dates in 2023:

January 16: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
April 22: First day of National Park Week
August 4: Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
September 23: National Public Lands Day
November 11: Veterans Day

National parks are America's best idea, and there are more than 400 parks available to everyone, every day. The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. The others are free all the time. The entrance fee waiver for fee-free days does not cover amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, boat launches, transportation, or special tours.

Should not charge entrance fee anyway. Taxes should cover it. Scam
It's not a scam, where I'm from, Mt. Lassen national park charges a fee to enter of $10. Some parks charge and some don't.

In other words, avoid National Parks on these particular days.

They do cover a lot of it. User fees help keep the traffic down just a little and put some of the burden of cost on the people actually using the park instead of entirely on the general public. The only real question is just about whether the fees are reasonable.

These will be the days I'll avoid Wink — but a nice incentive for people who otherwise might not go!

Unfortunately, this. National parks are already so packed in some places it already detracts from the experience. However, I applaud the free days for people that otherwise couldn't afford it. Better to see it crowded than not to see it at all.

Definitely. We went to one last year and there was a family arguing with the older woman running the gift shop because they had to pay $5/person for a daily trout fishing stamp. "IT SUPPOSED TO BE FREE!" she kept yelling. After about 10 minutes of no one else being able to check out, the park rangers showed up and escorted them out into the parking lot. We saw them fishing later with huge catfishing rods/reels. Yeah, good luck with that. And then the increase of litter lying around on the ground during these days. No thanks.

I felt the fees were reasonable at $10 but recently a couple of the parks near me (Nevada) jumped to $20. One of them also requires a $2 reservation fee.

Yeah, the recreation.gov thing feels like it's gotten out of hand. Reservations needed for basically everything now…

Agree. Belong to the people but the people have to pay to enjoy it. Like charging you entrance fee to enter your house.

Looking at my property tax and I'm being charge for recreation. And if I want to use that I have to pay again for usage. And than the "ACQUISITION" fine. I am paying fine to the government allow them to take and rob other's property, could be my property too. Like funding the pirate to take your stuff. New one to me is the ENTERTAINMENT fine. I wonder if I am not entertain, can I get a refund. LOL
Add personal property tax that some states charge and it can make you very bitter. Fleecing.
