Come experience the national parks! On five days in 2023, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. Mark your calendar for these entrance fee–free dates in 2023:

January 16: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
April 22: First day of National Park Week
August 4: Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act
September 23: National Public Lands Day
November 11: Veterans Day

National parks are America's best idea, and there are more than 400 parks available to everyone, every day. The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. The others are free all the time. The entrance fee waiver for fee-free days does not cover amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, boat launches, transportation, or special tours.

Save $10 but sit in traffic and fight the crowds. These free days must attract the same people that wait an hour in line at Costco to save $.15 a gallon on gas.

Great to avoid these dates. An overly crowded park hurts the experience.

Going on an uncrowded day is the best money you will ever spend

I will never ever go on these days again. Went once and never again. The parks will be so busy that it will not feel like you're in nature.

I would think Teddy Roosevelt's and/or Woodrow Wilson's birthdays would also be free.

If you just got one of the new Lifetime Free Military Passes, you don't need to worry about these days any more, right?

Agree. Belong to the people but the people have to pay to enjoy it. Like charging you entrance fee to enter your house.

Looking at my property tax and I'm being charge for recreation. And if I want to use that I have to pay again for usage. And than the "ACQUISITION" fine. I am paying fine to the government allow them to take and rob other's property, could be my property too. Like funding the pirate to take your stuff. New one to me is the ENTERTAINMENT fine. I wonder if I am not entertain, can I get a refund. LOL
To much of our taxes are going to the military industrial complex

should always be free. its our land.
"User fees" are generally fair because they place the cost of maintenance to the actual user, and they can be used to prevent overuse. Toll roads are a common example.

Should not charge entrance fee anyway. Taxes should cover it. Scam
It would ideally be free, but unfortunately, visitors have proven to be very destructive and disrespectful to the nature that exists at the parks. Just like any civilization, everyone suffers because of the actions of a few.

This also makes the free Veterans Day dumb I think.

Exactly. Come everyone and mingle with the dense crowds spreading COVID, flu, RSV, etc. just in time for the holidays.
These are outdoor parks and the first date that is free isn't for months. I guess you could drive around some inside your car with masks on.

I agree with this. You can say that the fees cover the volume or people or help control crowds but in reality, it just funds bad financial management, rec.gov fees, and pays Booz Allen to use our own parks that have been bought and paid for by the people.
