I have one of these and love it for winter in the Rockies. It is a tough outer shell for any and all storm weather, but is not quite as well insulated as a North Face Nuptse and other really poofy down jackets. So, I usually end up having to add a fleece underneath for 0 degree F or lower days (which is better anyway, because... layer system!) The McMurdo is not light or compressible though, so don't plan to pack it in a bag, unless you really are going to the South Pole or something.
if you can wait, these usually go on sale for less than $200 in the summer. I tried it on in REI before and it was too heavy for my liking
Excellent point on the weight. Online, I bought a pair of Timberland "shoes" that were a Timberland boot without the top part so it looked like a shoe. Ridiculously heavy.

Nobody's buying it for ultralight hiking in winter. I'm old, I'm tired of being cold and I never cared about being fashionable. Weight=warmth. For what I do outdoors it'll keep me plenty warm.
I'm looking for a jacket/parka for the cold but don't know what's good quality and value. I've never had anything like these. I want to be prepared for next winter

Woot has a Spyder Parker on sale, large size only though. Also medium on sale at Amazon.
I wonder if this is any warmer than the Uniqlo Ultra Warm Down Coat parka I have?
I'm not a North Face fan but this coat will be better than the Uniglo coat. If you really want a good coat this is OK but Helley Hansen or Patagonia might be a better choice at a higher cost. If you shop around you can find this coat a bit cheaper on some other sites not listed.
I have a canada goose parka jacket and another parka off brand that doesn't fit anymore I like this jacket wish it wasn't a parka though need a different style.

at this price, I would go for 800+ fill power. MH/SPYDER are there.
Otherwise, I will go for eddie bauer for the best quality-cost ratio, when on sale of course.
