That is kind of confusing then as the listing specs state:

The listing title then says FastFormat, not sure if that is referring to a feature of the drive or if that is the name of the Recertifiying company:

Update: FastFormat is a featue Segate drives have.

And then they define Manufacturer recertified as:

Talked to their customer service chat and they said they are recertified indeed by Seagate and that ServerPartDeals runs their own internal tests on top of it. That these drives are warrantied to have less than 50 power on hours.

Be aware that this drive is apparently pretty loud, as discussed during a previous sale here: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...rpm_19999/

Don't forget, many credit cards extend warranty by a year. It's an often overlooked benefit of credit cards

Thanks. Got 4x 12TB to upgrade my QNAP TS-453be NAS that is currently 4x8 and slowly running out of room. The largest drive it supports is 12TB so this was perfect.

Does Seagate actually make good drives now? This is obviously a great deal but if I spend 50% more for a drive that lasts more than twice as long that seems like it would be better in the long run.

So are Exos like a line that Seagate makes that are actually better than their consumer grade drives that fail after a few years?

Noob Q. My current desktop (Dell Inspiron 3880) has the following storage:
Part no.: BC511 NVMe SK hynix 256GB
Drive type: 256GB M.2 SSD
Drive form factor: M.2

Any way to use this 14tb as the boot drive?

If not, can this be "enclosed" and used as an external HDD?

TIA
Your Inspiron 3880 has at least one 3.5" HDD bay but the 256GB SSD will almost certainly be much faster. https://www.dell.com/support/manu...lang=en-us

It is possible but perhaps not easy for you (without a reinstall) to set this up as a boot drive if you still wish to do that.

With an external enclosure you could use this as an external drive.

Seagate had some controversy with falling drives some year in the mid 2010s I think, but any company is susceptible. Even then, that may have been overblown. WD is not without controversy either. See the recent rebrand of Red, generally the NAS drives, to Red (not ideal for NAS because SMR) and Red Plus (what Red originally was.

In Seagate, ironwolf are the CMR WD Red equivalent line and the Exos are enterprise.

Thanks! Between the 2 options (installing the HDD in the 3.5" bay vs using as external HDD with an enclosure), which would be faster for use as a Plex media source?

EDIT: the SSD continues to be the boot drive

Exos drives are Enterprise grade drives, so they are much above the consumer grade Barracudas, and certainly well above the disastrous 1.5TB drives Seagate sold a decade or so ago. I believe these are also Helium filled drives (for lower friction/resistance). Some will tell you one way or the other on whether He drives are worth going out of your way for. I'm in the camp that they are.

All of that said, let's not forget what's being purchased. These are refurbished drives any way you look at them. Refurbished by Seagate is a nice positive, but regardless the chatter about how great the seller is, there will still be a little more risk with a seller warrantying the drives vs Seagate, so do understand what you are buying. This is why the price is cheap. That's to make you okay with the (probably low) risks.

I personally have 3 of this model drive in my unRAID server, which is otherwise full of Western Digital drives. Mind you, they aren't refurbished, but certainly they perform at least as well. So I'm probably going to get 1 just to have on hand in case of any drive failure I experience.

There's a lot of negative sentiment toward Seagate in this thread, and I get it. I lost 25% of my Seagate 3 TB drives within 2 years back when that was about the largest drive available.

There's one big difference with these drives, however. These are enterprise-grade. My failed drives were consumer grade. Unless the people coming in with negative Seagate comments specify Seagate enterprise drives, take them with a grain of salt.

Of course, refurbs and shorter, non-manufacturer warrantees are less desirable. Decide if the cost savings makes it worth it for you.
Those 3TB drives were known to be a flawed design. Failure rate was very high. You are not alone in suffering failure of the 3TB models. However, newer models haven't had that issue.. whether consumer or enterprise grade

Theoretically, an external SATA case with USB 3.1 could be faster, but it would depend on your external case to be fast and efficient (read: you would need an expensive USB 3.1 case and not just a random cheap one). Also, it would add CPU overhead. In practice, the internal SATA connection would probably be more reliable and may prove to be faster depending on what other USB devices are in use and other factors we couldn't even guess at without more information.

If you don't already have one, you will need an internal SATA cable for an internal install, but no external case--so internal is obviously cheaper. I would go the SATA route myself. https://www.amazon.com/Benfei-Str...B07JFQ2H9R

Good luck!

14T renewed can be found on Amazon for $10 more. Not much a deal.

The middleman tax, as it were.
Some people just prefer not to do business with Amazon, but that's a different topic
