That is kind of confusing then as the listing specs state:

The listing title then says FastFormat, not sure if that is referring to a feature of the drive or if that is the name of the Recertifiying company:

Update: FastFormat is a featue Segate drives have.

And then they define Manufacturer recertified as:

Talked to their customer service chat and they said they are recertified indeed by Seagate and that ServerPartDeals runs their own internal tests on top of it. That these drives are warrantied to have less than 50 power on hours.

Be aware that this drive is apparently pretty loud, as discussed during a previous sale here: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...rpm_19999/

2-year ServerPartDeals warranty, NOT Manufacturer warrantied.

Pssst. Torrenting itself isn't illegal. He could very well be downloading or seeding legal content that he owns or is authorized to share.

I wouldn't touch a new seagate drive with a ten foot pole, let alone a refurb drive. My western digital drives have all easily outlived the few seagate drives I bought. Denied my warranty claim the one time I tried too. Never again.
Western digital are no better in terms of reliability. I jump around drive manufacturers each time have have to replace a drive. I've had to replace far more WD drives than Seagate. I'm currently giving Toshiba a try and so far it's been great. Hell I have a 2tb drive from Seagate that's so old it had a mini USB port on the external I pulled it from. I use it as a staging drive when I move stuff around. Also I'm not saying Seagate is great, just that western digital is no better.

Windows has it, but i used a software from WD that you can DL.
Windows has chkdsk command but that is limited and won't tell you much apart from the bad sectors. As for WD or Seagate, their disk checking software isn't trustworthy. They don't want you to know that your drive has errors so you won't return it or get a replacement.

Less than 50 hours on them after they have been been through the refurbished/recertified process?

What are you going on about?

Backups are for whatever length retention you want. You're the one who'll determine when to overwrite them. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

RAID is not retention. Period. It's uptime. It allows business continuity while you're able to get a replacement drive into the system and begin the rebuilding process.

Backups prevent data loss. Now the delta between your backup and current data is entirely up to you.....you can set that up for an entire system or down to a file level. Such as some systems don't change much, so a weekly backup is fine -- but on a different system, you can configure backups to occur every hour (or less). What's your tolerance for time to recovery?
Good advice and understanding here people.

Yeah - I don't know why they said 50 - and then said "on the rare occasion up to 500 hours" - quite a difference but even 500 isn't horrible.

That's got to be AFTER refurb. They probably reset the SMART data if it's done at Samsung?

Sorry I forgot to take a screenshot when I first got it, but I haven't had it running for long yet.

That's fair, and I shouldn't have said it so generically. In my experience, Seagate has failed every time. Keeping in mind that every drive will eventually fail, I have the opposite experience where my WD drives from many years ago still run great. My Seagates before and after them have died. I've had good experiences with toshiba and hitachi as well.

You should expect these to fail so use them in RAID. I would not use them singly to store important data... even if they were new.
This statement holds true for ANY hard drive. As does: Backup critical data.

RAID is for uptime, backups are for recovery. Seems obvious, but I can't count the number of folks I've encountered that think RAID implies that backups are unnecessary.

I haven't purchased refurb'd drives from these guys before, but I've heard very good things about them as a company.

The 14tb has a 1.48% annualized failure rate in Backblaze's Q3 2022 hard drive data. These refurb'd drives are likely past the early failures shown in the hard drive 'bathtub curve' and likely to be reliable for a long while.

I have multiple of these in my Unraid server and they have been working great for over a year (not refurb).

With all important data, use the 3-2-1 backup rule. 3 copies, 2 different media storage types, 1 copy in the cloud.

These are very tempting for me, but I don't really need more space right now.
I wouldn't trust putting sensitive data to the cloud. They can get hacked.
