How's the display .. is it ips or tn ..
When Dell uses the the term WVA means wide viewing angle which means IPS. They don't use that term IPS because it's actually a LG trademark and it's like how people use the term xerox on copy machines, it's synonymous but really someone else's trademark.

But realistically, i don't think you'd be using more than 16gb in a laptop of this caliber anyway. Still interesting to read though
Throw 32-64GB in it, bump the SSD up to 1-2TB, and you've got a great virtual server host with a built in 8 your battery backup.

The "caliber", of the internals is fine. It's the build quality and that are low end at this price point. But if you're rarely going to touch it or carry it around,, those don't matter.

Cheap laptops like this are perfect home or small business servers. Great choice to host QuickBooks multi user for example.

No.

IPS is a technical term used to describe a type of display technology. It is not a brand name that went generic like "xerox". LG didn't invent IPS.

The letters IPS with a bit of art attached to them are an LG trademark. IPS was not invented by LG and had been around years before LG started manufacturing their panels.

WVA is a type of TN panel. In general IPS panels have superior picture quality than TN panels. But TN panels are cheaper to make. Which is why you see TN panels on cheap laptops like this one.

You could have found all that out with about 5 minutes of googling.

Dell 5000 series laptops are known for mediocre display quality. That's why I usually get HP in this price range. Many of theirs use IPS displays.

That's definitely a noteworthy cost-saving vs. the enterprise models (though they're typically refurbs at around this price point. Although most Dell enterprise refurbs at around this price point still include a legacy laptop charger, most also support charging via the USB-C port (most were also designed for docking via USB-C/Thunderbolt, and even when they don't support Thunderbolt they'll still support USB-C charging).

Good luck!

My step dad called me this morning saying my mom wants a new laptop for Christmas. This was perfect, I swung by a Microcenter and now I'm a hero. Thanks.

It depends.

You're basically choosing a poor quality screen but a faster processor versus other laptops that would have a better screen but a somewhat slower processor.

If I was using it as a server I would go with this one. Pretty much perfect for home server or a small business server that does light duty tasks.

If I was using it as a daily driver I would go with one of the HPs that has a nicer screen but are somewhat slower processor. You won't notice the processor speed difference much. You'll notice the screen difference constantly.

Gateways, which is just a Walmart house brand nowadays, are straight up trash.

This Dell is merely mediocre. Far far far better.
