Can be had for the same price on MS store. MS store gift cards are always on sale for 10-15% off, might save a little. Better deals happened at Target too. Might be worth waiting if you don't need it right away.
I recently bought Series S to connect to the tv in my living room, already have Series X on the OLED in my basement. I did not realize that Microsoft syncs save files across consoles, so I can play a game on the Series X in my basement and then when I'm in the living room I can play same game and pick up where I left off. That's friggin cool
Serious question…do people only use this for game pass and nothing else? Digital games are almost always more expensive than physical and I don't see how this make sense longterm

I am always for disc set up but series s has its own place for 1.price (I picked mine up for 200 used) 2. Form factor (I use mine for traveling with attached screen. I can even play at the airport and my kids can play in the car). Makes it better than gaming laptop for less than 500 dollars. I am surprised that ms hasn't released its own first party screen yet. 3. You can use it as an emulator (although I am not really into emulation games)
I have this set up in my living room and xbox series x and ps5 set up in my game room.
I love my series s because how portable and cheap it is. And gamepass is awesome.

There have been sales in the past and people might have bought games adding to their growing backlog.
I wanted a Series X last year and bought myself a Series S after traded in my One X (previous gen) to Gamestop. This Series S has been great due to its small footprint while still being a very capable console to game on. I will get a Series X when it drop below $400.
