I get that the print bed is larger but I can't understand getting this when the Ender-3 can be had for $100ish right now. You may as well upgrade to a printer with more features if you're going to spend another $160.

I think that's the way creality line up works. Ender 3 pro is usually $100 at micro center when they have deals.

I purchased ender 5 pro instead of ender 5 because of the value vs money I would have had spent to upgrade ender 5.

I still upgraded bunch of other stuff. I read any many forums that 3D printing is not for everyone - IT is SO TRUE. Just don't give up, I printed so many things including ornaments for Christmas tree.

Just like any hobby be ready to spend some $$

Having a bigger print bed is a game changer if you want to print things like helmets without having to glue them together.

I own the Anycubic Chiron - which is a bit bigger than this for about $150 more. It's great, but so hard to get parts. Creality parts are easy to find and affordable.

This is a pretty great deal on this printer. I wish I had the space in my workroom/office for another printer so I could pull the trigger on this.

Is the "material" or upkeep to print out the item expensive?

Roughly $20 for a 1kg spool of filament (PLA) so depends on the size of your model but I think most people would say that it is not expensive … and thus why 3D printing has taken off

A larger print bed enables you to print many things that you couldn't otherwise or would be a lot more work to piece together on a smaller printer that often makes it not worth doing.

The material is going to either be for FDM printers like this one, or Resin printers, but for the most part any printer will work with any brand of print material. FDM is better for larger prints and resin is much better at fine detail and printing stuff that doesn't have the look of something more traditionally 3D printed on FDM with very noticeable print lines.

Neither, actually. Upkeep is pretty much just electricity, maybe replace a nozzle every 4-6 months ($10 for a 40-pack), and for material, you're buying plastic in bulk, essentially. More exotic materials (ie carbon fiber, wood filament) increase the cost of filament and nozzles, but it's not that bad.

That all assumes you have your printer working just right, though - and that's where the money can come in. Oh, my bed is a little warped, better get a new one - and I may as well upgrade. Hmm, my extruder is skipping, let me get a new one, and I may as well upgrade.

yes and no like someone else commented- your primary expense is the material you use to print.

I am going to be honest -
- I watched tons of videos on YouTube (teaching Tech, Madbot etc) which kinda give you a general idea.

- Everyone will tell you to upgrade the stock parts - does that help your print - yes and no. Are the parts expensive well the most expensive upgrade I did was the hot-end- Micro Swiss for $67-BF deal (the part that which melts the filament and makes a 3d print) which enabled me to use other types of filament other than the basic PLA as it can handle hotter temps.

- Is there a learning curve - yes, but it is not a long curve. Today there are millions of videos on YouTube. I would Highly recommend you purchase one of the known brands (Creality, prusa etc.) as there are tons of parts and support available (YouTube, reddit etc).

- I use Mainsail/Klipper firmware, it gives you so many additional features that a basic printer firmware can't - you basically control the printer via a Web UI (need Raspberry pi though).

- a few mistakes I made include buying bunch of filament not knowing what I can use them for. I buy my rolls from Microcenter or amazon. I do not trust Chinese websites with my credit card info. The cheapest roll I purchased was $14 PLA and most expensive was $32 TPU.

But if you have the time I highly recommend you get into 3D printing. I wish I did it years ago.

I gave you more info that you may have asked for. Hope this helps.

How important is it to get an auto-leveling bed for a newbie? I'm ok with tinkering but really wanting to get one for my son and don't want him to give up on it out of frustration. What else should I look for to get him started?

I would not recommend the "original" CR-10 in this day and age. It's only a 12V system and takes forever to heat up the print bed. Most printers now are at least 24V. Also, this is a really noisy printer using the old A4988 stepper drivers and not newer silent Trinamic drivers.

Otherwise, this is a solid machine and I've had one for a bit of time.

BL Touch costs $39 on amazon. or you can look up YouTube videos for manual bed leveling. Its not hard at all.

I've had this printer for years, and it's been pretty reliable when I needed it. print quality is great unless *I* screw something up. that said, this is too much...there has to be plenty of better printers with better features out there by now.
