Not a bad deal at all for this model. Great Swiss all-rounder, though a bit on the big size (44mm case diameter).

What is the difference between this and say a $250 watch? I love looking at these, but I'll never be able to afford this hobby.

The mechanical movement inside the watch is what drives the cost. It's $400ish I think. Because its a chronograph (can be used to time stuff) its more complex and thus more expensive. Plus Oris being swiss luxury adds a premium, like Tudor, Omega, Rolex, so you're paying a bit for the branding. But the truth is Oris is seen as a decent value because you have microbrands that go for $1000+. But lets be honest, Oris usually go for 40% off from third party sellers, so the MSRP is a bit inflated compared to say Tudor.

A well finished case and quality bracelet add to the cost as well as sapphire crystal (the glass doesn't scratch easy). It relies on physics for energy, not batteries like a quartz watch, so the movement is pretty complex and thus $400. And has some water proofing. Not sure if you are able to use the chrono at 100m depth? But if yes, that adds $$. If you want cheaper chronos you can get mechanical quartz chronos (meca quartz) using a much cheaper Seiko movement that would still have that satisfying click when you engage the chrono function. For example Dan Henry 1962 Racing Chronographs are all about $250 and use the Seiko movement. If you just like the looks, the seiko sna411 is a quartz chrono, not meca quartz, that was $199 msrp, but because it may or may not have been discontinued, not sure if its officially discontinued, its prices has jumped up to like $399.

I always wanted to buy fancy watches..but I realized it's far more economical to watch YouTube videos by watch enthusiasts..it satisfies my itch and saves me money.

Really good post but there are very few chronographs you should use submerged at any depth.

Ya I would never take a chrono under water even if the pushers were screw down and it was rated for it!

It should be easy enough to get a similar discount through an AD. I personally wish Oris made more large case sizes, like this one. They're a great brand overall and some of the best value in the watch world.

FYI this edition is based on Oris and Martini sponsorship of the Williams Formula 1 team which was several years ago (I want to say 5 years ago?) and so this is already dated. It's like buying a soccer club shirt from several years ago with the old sponsor on it.

When buying watches at this price point you should think about resell value (most hold their value or go up if you buy the right one and look after it), with this having dated branding on it it will continue to depreciate.

If one gets into buying and flipping watches, the best route is buying used in watch forums from good sellers. They're talking the depreciation as in used cars. If you're buying new it's essential to get the lowest price possible and understand you're still going to lose money selling it. You'll break even on very few brands and make money on virtually nothing.

24mm lug width on a 44mm case, and I wonder how 13mm thickness is achieved with this movement...

Still regret not getting one of the Williams TT1 watches a few years ago when they were selling around $500. Sure, the sponsorship might be over, but it's a nice way to get a discount on what are still very good looking watches.
