Ladies and gents, this thread is about 16gb ram M1 mba. If 8gb M macbook satisfies your needs, good for you. You are more than welcome to feel strong about your opinion but that doesn't always mean it's true. I honestly don't even understand why ppl would come here and explain others how sufficient 8gb m1 macbook is. Ppl are here because this is a good deal. I don't think anyone would disagree that a 16gb ram macbook would go further than a 8gb macbook. This is not a cheap product and that's why we are all here. To buy good products at a good price that would hopefully last for a long time.

It does not matter, as efficient as the M chips are, that doesn't mean the apps you use are all optimized. If one app uses 4gb of ram then it uses 4gb of ram. And that's one app. Even if the apps uses only a few hundred, end of the day, 16gb allows more apps open and running simultaneously (especially background apps). I also speak from actual experience of owning a M1 Air 8GB. I figured 8gb should be fine on a Mac especially an M1 chip but nope. That thing got slow a lot and I'm not even a power user. Traded that in for the base model 14" pro with 16GB ram. Works so much better.

If this was under a 1000, instant buy. I don't really care for the 1TB.

I've heard many times in these threads that the argument you put forth is just not true on the M architecture. It is true if you're talking about Intel chips. But the M architecture blows Intel away that 8GB is really like 16GB on Intel. It's that much better and 16GB on an M chip is really for like a fraction of people that edit videos, high end photos, etc. So anything else it's a waste of $.
I'll disagree.

I've personally felt the lag on my wife's 8GB M1 while doing trivial tasks. Prefer it over any Intel? Absolutely. I've used almost all generations of the Intel 16GB MBPs since their inception in 2012 for work, and currently use a 32GB M1 Pro for work so I am familiar with the spectrum of tasks. I'm a software developer as well as a photographer.

I'm all-in the Apple ecosystem and have been for some time.

But IMO the 8GB is still shameful in this day and age, at the very least for anything called "MacBook Pro".

I have this laptop (the 16gb is necessary for my workload, the 8gb is much better than windows but not the same as a 16gb especially if using rosetta apps). Great laptop - I've had issues docking it but am hoping to clear those up ... at ... some point. For everything else it's fantastic, and no fan is nice.
It's a little under this used on Swappa. If you want new though, this is a great deal! I paid a bit more than this for mine, used, a year ago.

I just bought the 16" M1 Pro for video editing and some After Effects (rotoscoping,l and integration with Blender). I got it on a Slickdeal but it was still 700 more than this. Do you think I can do video editing and some vfx on this MBA and be okay?
It's going to be a much worse experience on this - the pro's graphics card is between 2 to 4 times faster. I wouldn't make the switch personally for that workload.

I see this mantra ofter (similarly to Costco holywars in each Samsclub topic), but if you are using a laptop for youtube and google docs you should consider switching to iPad + keyboard.
While Apple Silicon handles many apps really well in terms of speed, how hell the new CPU architecture could help one to load a large app/data in memory?
If you only consume a content (youtube, netflix, spotify, reddit, sd) then even if you have a lot of apps/tabs OS can just move them back and forth between RAM and SSD (swap) quickly and you won't notice the issue (unlike let's says Windows with slow disk). But still, many sites are now memory hungry – while I'm writing this post, a tab with amex site consumed almost 1gb of RAM. Simple browsing may cause high memory pressure (check Activity Monitor -> Memory tab) and thus extensive swapping. I use 8gb M1 machine right now in my bed and my swap size is 4.2gb (that's over 8gb), only browser tabs and office apps (also extensive swapping causes quicker SSD wear). I've experienced lags on 8gb machine with only browser tabs. Even iPhones (max one app on the screen) have 6gb RAM nowadays (iPhone 12 Pro and newer).

Let me re-phrase my post in car terms - this post is about a nice prev. MY pickup with AWD and towing rating. And you say why one needs AWD and tow rating to use a car for commute in Miami. Yes, there is no benefit from these things for commute and grocery shopping. Another question here is why people buy large pickups to drive between mcdonalds and walmart. But that does not mean that nobody needs them.

I heard enough of this, but nobody can explain why

Biggest complaint for me, is natively can only do one external display. Otherwise it's a great deal. Note you can do multiple displays with external video card adapters, just not natively.

But it's a good price don't expect the M3 MBA to be anywhere near this price.

8GB in the new M architecture is efficient enough for 99% of the users out there, there has been plenty test videos on YouTube can attest to this.
don't put out false information if you don't own one
For longevity reasons the 16GB investment is well worth it. Most computer consumption is not bound on CPU, it's the RAM limits that force computers replacement. Take my 2011 MacBook Air 11". It was great in 2011, super fast. Chrome became more and more bloated and now it barely even runs a tab. Buying the RAM now will probably double the lifespan for this laptop for most people.

What is going on? All these Mac deals in the last couple of months. With supply shortages, I would think these prices would be remain on the high side. Or is this a result of producing using their own chips? Is Apple really putting an effort to be competitive?

If I'm not mistaken, these support one external monitor. I think you need the m1 pro chip the support two.

I got this at Black Friday (16GB and 1 TB) and love it. Very glad I got the 16GB and 1TB. I do music production and programming. For music dev, I now have all of my music and samples on one drive, and am portable. It's amazing and so convenient. The 16GB comes in handy for when I do Mac and Android dev. I can run Android and iOS virtual devices, Visual Studio, and have a large project up and use about 13GB memory (and the machine never throttles).
