Ladies and gents, this thread is about 16gb ram M1 mba. If 8gb M macbook satisfies your needs, good for you. You are more than welcome to feel strong about your opinion but that doesn't always mean it's true. I honestly don't even understand why ppl would come here and explain others how sufficient 8gb m1 macbook is. Ppl are here because this is a good deal. I don't think anyone would disagree that a 16gb ram macbook would go further than a 8gb macbook. This is not a cheap product and that's why we are all here. To buy good products at a good price that would hopefully last for a long time.

It does not matter, as efficient as the M chips are, that doesn't mean the apps you use are all optimized. If one app uses 4gb of ram then it uses 4gb of ram. And that's one app. Even if the apps uses only a few hundred, end of the day, 16gb allows more apps open and running simultaneously (especially background apps). I also speak from actual experience of owning a M1 Air 8GB. I figured 8gb should be fine on a Mac especially an M1 chip but nope. That thing got slow a lot and I'm not even a power user. Traded that in for the base model 14" pro with 16GB ram. Works so much better.

Air vs Pro… what's the difference?
pro has a fan, performance difference is between 5~10% when you're maxing out the CPU and the fan kicks in.
pro has slightly better mic and cam but it's still 720P

Loads of differences - Pro is a better machine in almost all aspects. Air is slightly lighter, cheaper and good enough for many people.
Most people may not "need" the power of the Pro, but will appreciate the better and larger screen, much better speakers, and better webcam.
The M2 Air, improves the M1 Air screen etc (though not as good as the Pro) so helps narrow the gap a little on those fronts.

I understand but this is Slickdeals, not pay something extra to double the ram for longivity hoping we'll need it some day.
as I pointed out majority of buyers wouldn't need the extra ram, is it nice to have, obviously, nobody is questioning that.
and to those who use for heavy work with 8GB that's not enough, you fall into that very minority group and shouldn't even bought 8GB to begin with.
Slickdealers are cheap. Adding a few hundred extra dollars almost guarantees you will replace your laptop less frequently saving money in the long run. This laptop is a good deal at this price.

It's more like some slickdeals are "penny wise, pound foolish", or maybe they can't afford to pay more a little more up front to get a lot more. Some people just don't futureproof for reasons I can't understand. Been using the same 2015 Macbook Air for the past 7 years and purposely got 8gb of RAM back then, and only now I'm considering buying the one listed here. If I needed 8gb 7 years ago, I certainly need 16gb now, and I fully expect to get 5+ years out of this new one - hopefully 10.

Keep in mind these laptops use PWM (power width modulation).
If you're sensitive to PWM these will screw your vision up after a a few hours
I had to return one even though I liked it/
My vision was still blurry a couple hours after use

I have been using the M1 base model for a little over a year, my personal work as well as Citrix workspace and never had felt that it slowed down to the extent where I would think I need a better machine. So I don't know what people are doing and complaining that their base M1 was slow etc!

If you're a tidy user that keeps minimal apps open and just a few tabs open in your browser than you're fine. Even my wife keeps multiple tabs open of youtube, tiktok, facebook, instagram, and twitter on her base M1 8gb memory pressure meter in activity monitor is on the yellow/red zone. I would've picked this up over the base machine anyday.

I've heard many times in these threads that the argument you put forth is just not true on the M architecture. It is true if you're talking about Intel chips. But the M architecture blows Intel away that 8GB is really like 16GB on Intel. It's that much better and 16GB on an M chip is really for like a fraction of people that edit videos, high end photos, etc. So anything else it's a waste of $.

Your use case is bottom of the barrel and 8GB is more than enough for it.

I used intel mac machines in the past for work and I do not miss them a bit. they overheated so easily. Fans were loud. Battery life was a joke. Oh and the infamous butterfly keyboard. I've been using my m1 mbp for about 6 months now and boy the grass is much greener lol this is my first mba and i hope the experience is similar.
Its ironic you are blaming Intel for butterfly keyboards. It was Apple's ineptitude and its fans blind buying spree that kept those absurd keyboards for as many generations of MBA/MBP as it went.
Moreover, when there was no M1 MBA, the same crowd that is loathing Intel MBAs would die for it. Its really both amusing and sad at the time

Fine with me. My current Macbook Air is "obsolete" I believe and it still works great. Only seeking a new one because I knocked a couple of the keys off accidentally, and I don't feel like tearing the machine down to change out the keyboard. Currently using an external keyboard with it. Figure I'll just sell this one and take what I can get.
