Compared to Sonos One SL
The IKEA SYMFONISK Bookshelf speaker and the Sonos One SL are similar speakers. The Sonos is smaller and has a more neutral-sounding sound profile. However, the IKEA can get slightly louder than the Sonos with fewer compression artifacts present at max volume, so your audio sounds clearer during louder listening sessions.

He means the actual surround setup, which is limited to the sound bar, two surrounds and a sub (or two subs). You can add as many of these to your house as you want, but each surround sound setup is limited.

If I have two of these (paired with a beam and sub) working as side speakers, does it make sense to add one more as a rear?

Got it, thank you! TU for still a good deal, as I paid MSRP for a pair ~6 months ago.

Out of genuine curiosity, why not?

I thought that was the whole point of Sonos. Are these just not fully compatible?

These almost never go on sale. Sure it's only 20 off but that's as good as it's going to get. Additionally this is the cheapest way to get a Sonos setup.

I have three of these, the first two I have had since they were released. I don't own the One, so I can't offer first hand experience, but when I was researching them, I came across a YouTube tear down video that concluded they were basically the same speaker in a different housing. The ikea speakers don't have a mic, I forget whether the One does, but that might have been the main difference.

These are great, they really blend into shelves and countertops better than the One's. They sound really nice, just be aware that they do not have the humidity resistance of the One's, so not really good for bathroom or keeping outdoors.

Yes, his 5.1 setup is maxed out. BUT he can still play the same audio thru these in same or other rooms. Pairing in app or airplay allows same sounds to come out, but not a discrete channel.

I have a pair under my work desk and in my garage. When you get two they sound great and put out more clean bass than they should.
