Not bad. The 2TB version was $160 in BF and $180 now. I think we will see the price go down more.

PSA: This drive DOES NOT support hardware encryption for Bitlocker if that matters to you even though the reviews advertise it as a spec and it advertises "hardware encryption" on the site.

IT DOES NOT.

Microsoft stopped trusting SSD hardware encryption a while ago after it discovered some manufactures didn't actually encrypt data as expected or used default keys to unlock all data. I have a SK Hynix P31 and P41 drives and both don't have any issues with Bitlocker.

Price is NOT $104.99 for everyone, it is listed as $149.99.

Lots of these "deals" listed lately are for prime members only, not for everyone.

Thanks for the article. I'm going to read it now.

When you say "both don't have any issues with Bitlocker", are you saying that they have the ability for instant hardware Bitlocker encryption or are you using software Bitlocker encryption?

I'm using Bitlocker on my P41 2TB but I had to resort to encrypting via software and not hardware.

Good catch. It's easy to miss that label "Exclusive Prime price" in gray text.

Using software encryption, I haven't had any perceivable performance problems or limitations. To be fair, I only used software encryption for Bitlocker, even on drives that support hardware based encryption. So the Bitlocker performance factor wasn't something I was actively looking for when it came to hardware level encryption support.

There's definitely performance differences, but not ones you can see with the naked eye.

Limitations are much slower decryption/encryption times.

This seems to be what most people are saying. It is annoying that MS has basically moved everyone to software encryption but modern CPUs shouldn't have any issues with it. A modern CPU has more than enough horsepower to decrypt and encrypt in realtime without a "noticeable" performance hit, whatever that means (I haven't found benchmarks to compare), probably because most of your cores sit idle most of the time (especially when waiting on IO), and it's difficult to find situations where you're pushing both the CPU to the limit AND relying upon your max data storage transfer rate at the same time, and if you are then you KNOW who you are and are probably running very high-end hardware to account for that.

I just bought the Crucial P5 Plus with the SD deal and it does advertise some newer "Opal 2" etc. compliance which MAY allow hardware encryption by Bitlocker standards, but the rest of your system has to support HW encryption too, which many don't properly. Sadly, my Asus Zephyrus G14 doesn't properly support it due to BIOS choices by Asus, no matter what SSD I use. This is fairly common.

TLDR, just use Buttlocker, or Veracrypt software encryption if you don't trust MS with your drive encryption keys.

Veracrypt is fine for containers but I wouldn't trust it for my entire system, too risky!

How would you check this and could you build a new PC with all the right parts to support hardware encryption?

"Cache Size: 1"

Can anyone definitively say if this has DRAM or not?
