Would this be a decent chromebook to use for gaming for a 13 year old? My son wants a laptop or chromebook to play games, youtube, etc. Want to get something somewhat decent and the open box price is in my preferred price range, lol.

I will never understand these things… There are so many things you can't do on them, that it just doesn't make sense for most people.
I've used a Chromebook as my primary device since 2014 and as my only device since around 2016. It does everything that 95% of the people need a laptop to do.

Says who? By that logic, an iPad does what 95% of people need. This raises the real question do most people even need this form factor anymore? If they do, it likely isn't for basic computing needs.

Microsoft Office is limited, Photoshop, Premiere, and Lightroom are extremely limited, and the only way I can see to get it more functional is to load Linux on it, which most people won't do.

So, emailing, web browsing, chat, or social media, with casual gaming... Your phone can do all of that.
You're probably right about the iPad getting most people all the way there too with the biggest difference being that it doesn't have a full browser.

I will absolutely agree that office on the Chromebook has a limited feature set when compared to it's counterpart on a PC, but the real question is what features are missing from the office PWA that are used by a large percentage of people? Photoshop? Lightroom? Do you really believe that the average computer user is using these programs?

You touched on my exact question. I just need web browsing, Word and Excel to work and you mentioned Office is limited. Do you know about those two?

You do know some people prefer to email, write docs, web browse/research, social media, streaming in a notebook format rather than staring at a tiny phone or touch around a tablet screen.
The vast majority of home users are not paying/using office, adobe etc

So, I guess you are the guy who complains about 8Gb of RAM and 250 nits screen on a$100 device as well, aren't you?

Do you need MS Office or just a word/spreadsheet processor? I imagine most people use Chromebooks with Google Docs and Sheets which is great because it can be accessed anywhere vs. just locally. There are online versions of MS Office but I'm not familiar personally.
