Could be because steel cut oats are one of the current health fads. Anything popular is going to be more expensive regardless of the cost to produce it.

Good deal. Too bad the 15% only works on one unit.

And don't understand why steel cut oats are so expensive, $2.2/lb after discounts. Just cut commodity grain (oats are $3.5 a bushel or $0.1/lb from farmers). How does it go from $0.1 to $2.2 🤔.

Compares to things like pasta, which requires more work from wheat (about the same price as oats in commodity market), often cost less then $1/lb retail.

But it's very easy to produce. Econ 101 tells us that if there's no fundamental shortage (no shortage of oats, as indicated by the cheap wholesale price), and easy to produce ( just cut up the oats. No complex multi step process), there should be competitive production/pricing. (Relatively speaking, face masks are much more complex to produce but we saw the price went from very expensive to very cheap in less than a year)

Maybe I need to go into the steel cut business to bring the price down to a profitable but more reasonable $1/lb.

Just like white rice vs. brown rice.
Brown rice is easier to produce but it's more expensive than white rice.

The market for brown rice is much smaller (than white) and brown rice go bad much faster, making it less efficient for the mills to keep inventory. And brown rice might be just slightly more expensive than white, when comparing the same brand in Asian grocers. And they mostly stay at a somewhat reasonable price of under $1/lb for 15/20lb bags

Just don't understand steel cut oats. Are these sold at Costco? How much?

I wasn't making a purely supply/demand argument. People will go out of their way to pay Whole Foods prices because it's Whole Foods, or Lululemon, or Nike. A "status tax," if you will. The current trend with steel cut is similar. [none of this should be interpreted as rejecting the health benefits of steel cut oats, by the way]

I did some math on Greek yogurt. One wouldn't save much making yogurt at home. Not sure what you are referring to.

There are more expensive/fancier yogurt brands. But there are also good economical options. I can't find economical/reasonable options for steel cuts.

You are not making that argument but that shouldn't mean basic supply/demand Econ 101 doesn't work here.

Lululemon is not a good analogy because steel cut is a commodity. I'm not stuck on bob's mill ultra luxury steel cut. Any bug free, rock free steel cut will do.

Well thats just 101. If you stayed the course and took 303, it will tell you that companies are going to charge based on consumers willingness to pay, not just their production cost.

And if you go back to 101, it tells you when there is a higher price, more suppliers will show up and that brings the price down.

Fage is around $6 for 32oz. Crazy expensive but its easily twice as good as the store brand pr chobani.

No argument. 🙌🏼 Still eating Fage after they shank the container by 9% and increased the price by 11% this year. That's a 21% inflation…

The 9% shrinkage made me reduce my breakfast proportionally 😬 (4 breakfast when it was 1000g and still 4 now it's 908/32oz)

On the other hand, steel oats is unjustifiably pricy.
