Just a PSA for those who don't already know. The KEF LS50 (including Metas) have been notoriously picky with the type of amplifier they are paired with. These speakers require high power as their impedence goes pretty high in the mid and low frequencies. They tend to sound thin and harsh if paired with cheap Class D amps from a receiver or cheaper amps in general that dont have the ability to provide high current on-demand.

Would highly recommend Class AB amps with these speakers to get the best out of them. Example: Rotel RB-1552 or RA-1572; Arcam SA20 or higher; Monolith 2x200watt amp or higher; McIntosh MC152 (have personal experience with this one and sounds amazing with the LS50s). Etc.

I'm a KEF fan but these speakers are not for everyone. You need a good amp + a good subwoofer. You'll be in for a disappointment if you don't do the pairing correctly. Previous comment did mention the amps, but i would skip the Rotel and Monolith. They r bright amps. Bright amp + bright speakers = ear bleed. Get warmer amps like Arcam SA20, Marantz 40n. And yes, big no-no to class D amps.

I don't want to get into a debate here but this is absolutely wrong advice. All amps sound the same given they have enough current and low floor noise and distortion. Class D has come a long way, you can easily get your hands on sota class D amps like Purifi for $800.

This deal is cracking though, have been very happy with my metas being drive by a 18 yr old receiver. To reach 90DB SPL at 1m distance, you only need 8W of power to drive these (just use any power calc). Don't let anyone try to sell you audiofool bs.
Would recommend getting a sub if its for a larger space.

Has anyone compared the Metas (with a suitable amp) to the Genelac G Three self powered speaker system?

The Genelacs seem to garner universal praise, and have earned a Class A rating in Stereophile (The Metas also garnered a Class A rating).

It seems like the Genalecs will come in for less money if you consider the matching amp you'll need purchase to power the Metas.

Any thoughts on how the Genalecs compare?
Genelacs are amazing. I don't think you'd go wrong either way. Passive speakers give you a little more control with the stack if you so choose. I run KEF R3s with a Minidsp SHD and a Purifi with an SVS SB-4000.

The main reason I run passive is so I can use DIRAC and the parametric eqs and filters for sub integration in the minidsp, but the Genelec would be a very close second for me with their dsp options and phenomenal performance.

And now we've arrived to audiophile golden ear myth-land. Somehow, whenever we start taking numbers and measurements, it devolves into pseudo-science excuses.
Great catch! If only the likes of McIntosh labs and the rest of the audio industry took measurements?! Whatever will they do now?

Walk in the recording studio and tell this to musicians and sound engineers.

They are using actives like Genelac and not McIntosh audiophile bs, but nice try.

grabbed an ls50 when bb clearanced it (also had bunch of rewards). also grabbed a yamaha as801 (ls50 sounds thinner with av receiver or entry nad) when it was low here on SD. I also sampled it in store with other equipments & it sounds similar. it's a studio monitor so I added a sub for bass. I remember when SD had the kc62 for a great price but I just stuck with monolith subs for music & bass. going to stick with this setup for music for a long time. compared to some focal, klipsch, Martin Logan, magnepan lrs, q150, etc & prefer ls50 for clarity & imaging.

Nice try to steer away from your point about ear. And you never been in real recording studio.

About ear? What? I've spend a lot of time in recording studios. They use high-end active monitors, not BS audiophile amps and speakers.

Your home studio doesnt count dude. Also define High-end, i thought your $750 hypex was godly, should try to sell those to Lucasfilms and tell them their current gear sucks

Not your guy, pal.

McIntosh is great, but expensive. Recording studios don't use 'em. This is a thread for $1100 speakers and you're spouting mythical audiophile trash.

I'm not your pal, buddy.

You starting this pointless argument claiming your hypex amps are end all be all and produce the most accurate measurements. Why not sell those to movie and recording studios? Surely they care about measurements

Lol, ok. I never said anything about Hypex at recording studios. They almost always use high-end active monitors like Genelec, Neumann or ADAM. If you've spent any time in one, you'd know that.
