Pricing is currently normal TurboTax + $10. This should drop when the deal goes live on 12/28. Don't bother trying to buy it early.

Yes it's being delayed a year, there's an article abt it at irs.gov. However, it was only ever a reporting change; you've always owed taxes on PayPal/Venmo/etc business income whether it was $20K, $600, or $10. You owe the same taxes you've always owed, it'll just be a lot harder to cheat now (2023 tax year with delay)

I usually buy Premier because my dad has rental property. is TurboTax forcing me to use premiere or can Deluxe be used to handle rentals?

Deluxe has everything that premier has wrt Schedule D and auto-import (which you definitely want to use)

I've daytraded and had hundreds of trades downloaded including stocks/options/futures, deluxe (desktop) handled it all.
We have a winner! Finally a solid answer on the premiere vs deluxe question. Thank you. Repped

So what's the diff between deluxe and premier? We sold some stocks in brokerage account and was going to import them, should we just buy deluxe?
Yes, based on mine and others experience here. Not sure what exactly the difference is between deluxe and premier.

I need to file in the same state twice (once for myself and once for my wife) do I need to purchase a separate state file or does the one included state allow an additional filing?
You are fine, you don't need to buy anything extra

One copy can efile 5 federal and state tax returns, each state tax return that is efiled will cost $25

Admittedly, I may be one of those people. I purchased Premier for the past 5 years, including now, just to be sure. Their Desktop Edition Comparison [intuit.com] page states the following for investments: Additional help for investment sales such as stocks, bonds, royalties, mutual funds and employee stock plans.

The purposely vague phrasing "Additional help" likely indicates that most of what you need for investment sales is would be included in the Deluxe version. I would love to know what the exact difference is. That extra $20 is paying dividends for their marketing team.
I'm really glad to see that I'm not the only one who noticed this; it's clearly deceptive and intended to get people to pay more for a product version I don't need. In addition to buying favor in Congress to keep taxes and filing too complicated for the average U.S. citizen, they do purposely misleading things in their application: For example, they have animated "progress bars" that are purposely slowed down to make it look like it's doing some kind of complex calculations that are "looking to maximize your deductions". It's like playing a mobile game, but even more annoying and, despite the lawsuits and fines Intuit is embroiled in, the "house" always wins.

If you don't need extra help then yes Deluxe is all you need.

Deluxe handles brokerage account info just fine

Deluxe handles business deductions and expenses just fine.

I've done self-employed business (Schedule C) with deductions and expenses (include Sect 179 deductions) for years with Deluxe only.

Unless you think you are going to need extra "handholding" from Turbotax, Deluxe will do it.
I kind of like turbotax guide for everything if this what you mean by handholding (don't need phone support or anything like that as I can do everything myself). I have not played with deluxe and the forms themselves. sometimes it is a pain. the cost for me between deluxe and home and business is a $23 difference. maybe it is worth it

Why? Don't both Amazon and Costco versions have 1 free efile for State?
Neither of them include a free state e-file. Both of them include free Federal preparation and e-file. Both of them also include state preparation but not e-file. Either you print the state return and mail it or pay additional fee for state e-file.

In description it says:

- Includes 5 Federal e-files. and 1 State via download (State e-file sold separately)

So if I need to do taxes for 3 different people I have to buy 3 copies?

"Prepare" and "File" are different. This includes 5 federal "preparations" and 1 state "preparations."

E-file costs extra. Most people just print out their preparation forms and mail it in to file.

I share mine with family. They prepare their federal and state. I prepare my federal, turn off my internet, prepare my state, print off both federal and state to mail, and un-install the software. So I'm able to get multiple state preparations that way.
Honestly I dont think there is any limit on the number of returns you can "prepare" with TT, I often create several "what if" versions of returns and have never hit any limit.

I believe these are the actually limits:

5 installations of the software
5 federal efile (I've never tested this limit)

I don't believe there is any limit on the number of returns you can "prepare" including state returns and I doubt there is any limit on the number of state tax returns you can efile considering you are charged for each one.

Again I haven't tested these limits so if someone knows better please feel free to correct but I know there that the statement that there is one state prepare is not true.

I use a single copy (single install) to prepare multiple federal and state returns. I think the extra steps you are taking (turning off your internet) to avoid "1 state prepare" are not necessary.

People say the "web version" at intuit.com forces you to buy Premier if you need to do stocks/crypto. Deluxe is fine if you use the "desktop version", which is either download or physical disc. I can't believe I've been paying extra for Premier. Definitely shady marketing.

One copy can be used by 5 different people (5 installs)

Each install can do a federal efile and state return. Each state efile will be charged separately, no charge for print/mail state.

I'm assuming you and your family are using federal e-file as it is included in this price. Or was there some other reason for you to print and file federal return? Yes, the deal does not include state e-file.
I think they mean they e-file for the federal (which is free) but print out and mail in the state return which costs $2 - $3 to mail as opposed to paying $25 to turbotax to efile.
