I have a set of light controllers from a few years back that used to be powered by an app. Now the company is gone, the app is off the App Store, and I have useless paperweights that won't do what I expected. Buyers beware of such setups.
Link?

It really is remarkable how expensive these still are

Also to follow up with my comment re: Costco, I have both RGB and RGBW and there is zero difference. You can program a warm white yourself on the RGB.
So for most people, yes you can create a warm white with just RGB (yellow and orange as Twinkly says). However, there are 8 MAJOR differences between the two and why they make an RGB+W. That extra white color chip is a critical difference. Here's a nice summary for other folks showing differences. More vibrant and precise colors is a starter.

In case anyone else was curious for more comments.
"The RGBW LED, on the other hand, provides a brighter and more pure white light performance because of the additional white light diode. There are also RGBWW (RGB+ warm white), RGBCW (RGB+ cool white), and RGBNW (RGB+ neutral white) additional diodes available, depending on the color of the additional diode. RGBW LED lights are ideal for illuminating complicated and precise situations such as a shopping mall or a hotel. For colorful ornamental lighting, RGB is adequate, or a secret light band is necessary. For task lighting that demands bright white, RGBW is the best option."

"RGBW LED lights are often superior to RGB LED lights. The inclusion of a white LED chip improves light quality while also lowering energy usage and increasing lighting efficiency."

"In theory, RGB LEDs may produce white light by combining the fundamental red, green, and blue photons. However, the mixture contains color blending and diffusion, resulting in fictitious white light. This type of white light appears to be obscured by fog.

People will have an unpleasant visual experience due to the foggy light. RGBW LEDs, on the other hand, may create cleaner white light and lower saturation colored light, giving our eyes a more pleasant visual experience. Furthermore, due to the addition of white light LED, RGBW LED light can provide a larger spectrum of distinct color shadings hues and is more flexible in color mixing."

That's all fine and good, but in case I wasn't clear my point was I own multiple strands of both and there is no difference to my eye or anyone else who's seen my lights. It would absolutely not be worth the difference to not buy the Costco version and have, essentially, a lifetime warranty. Because CS is also total crap in my experience.

Ive have seen a few people post on the facebook group and here who claim to own both make similar arguments. Not that there is no difference but that the difference is too minor and the trade off of incompatible RGB / RGBW strings isnt worth it.

Maybe it makes a huge difference with other lights but it seems for Twinkly, the extra diode can be emulated good enough. The Twinkly bulbs have a matte diffused cover and will never get that shimmer you can get with incandescent glass bulbs that I think people are hoping to replicate.

I gotcha now. Thanks for the clarity. I figured you weren't saying there weren't differences, but that most people, perhaps, won't be able to tell a difference which is why I prefaced that. I have also heard Twinkly CS is terrible and a Costco buy would be better for those that have a membership.

According to this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/smarthom...w_existed/

"set the RGB value to FFC56D to match the W (no need to buy the RGB-W). (unfortunately you cannot just type in the RGB value)
The 600 RGB-W are a bit faster than the 600 RGB, but that is only important if you like very fast animations on your tree."

I've decided to wait until Costco has another sale on these even if it's just the RGB version.

Still a great deal though. TU. 👍

Light Rhapsody? That's what I had which no longer paired with Alexa this winter and why I got these. Big improvement though, those look much cooler 😁

This is why Twinkly commands such a high price tag. They have a patent on camera mapping of lights so it's all done in software on your phone/tablet. In 20 years the patent will be gone and these strings will probably be $30 + inflation. So maybe $500.
Thank you. This is helpful.

Here is a short string of RGB set to "white" next to another string of RGB set to #FFE589 "warm white".

Both are at 50% brightness so it doesn't blow out my camera.

Does this esbenshades site (never heard of them) have any coupon codes for new customer signups or anything?

There are lots of other Twinkly lights also on sale from here - I just picked up Festoons as a pretty good price.

Also, unless you already have Twinkly RGBs, you may be better off getting the RGB+W which costs just slightly more for the 600 count:

Their main downside is that you'll need to match them and RGB+W is harder to find on sale but they do look warmer than RGBs based on online reviews.
Totally agree. It took me awhile to figure out that the RGB+W is different than the only RGB. I prefer the versatility of only white at times. I bought 4 sets. I had to buy the icicle RGB+W from Amazon. This is a great price for a premium product that rarely goes on sale.

For RGB it was, not the RGB+W, which is $150 for the 600 string. Here's the link. You won't find a better deal on these!

Oh got it! If I get this RGBW set, does it work well with the RGB set I bought too?

I also bought a tree from Costco with 600 twinkly lights. Don't remember if they are RGB or RGBW

Costco evergreen classics is RGB. RGB lights will NOT work together with RGB+W. The effects will be different and you will not be able to link the lights to each other.

Does the rgbw string light effect look good on flocked white trees compared to traditional green ones?

In for 10 sets of Icicle Whites and Colors, these are hard to come by, now lets see if they ship, these guys have 3 stores in PA.
