14.9 pounds for the larger bag is hefty. Even cheaper hard-side spinners top out at 11 pounds. Your useful load is 35 pounds for this bag.
I actually bought both the Delsey and this Samsonite set for a three week family trip. I ended up returning the Delsey and keeping this Samsonite set. It's larger, has better internal organization, and felt overall better quality than the Delsey.
Maybe I am old school but we prefer soft bags, specially carry-ons. For one simple reason - we end up opening the carry-ons on long (8+ hours) flights couple of time onboard. Hard case ones makes it so much difficult to open in the tight space you have onboard because both sides (top and bottom) of the luggage would need to lay flat. On the flip side, soft case ones, you just open the top/lid part. So it makes it so much easier to access stuff in soft case ones than hard case ones.

Good deal, however with many of the airlines have restrictions in terms of weight it is difficult with this specs (I know some of them like Etihad, Emirates are very particular with Carry on and Check in baggage weight)

This one has this spec - 20 inch - 6.4 pounds and 27 inch - 14.9 Pounds

There are other 3 pieces set with hardshell, at 10 pounds. Especially with International travel, I feel every pound counts :-)

I decided not to get this set because the soft rubber handle is not going to last long. It feels great when new but the type of rubber used will get tacky and gross. Yes yes we can always return it but I still try to buy with the intention of long term ownership

I think it depends. When I travel solo, I like to travel light and go with a soft bag of only clothing, and a backpack with phone and other valuables. this also allows travel on motorbike.
If I'm traveling with family/others, I'll take the larger hard-sided luggage. easier for young ones to push or sit on if tired. can hold souvenirs or whatever.
When I travel alone I just keep the same underwear and undershirt the entire week. Since I'm a lone ya know …. Doesn't mean I travel light though

Can anyone comment with real experience comparing this to the Delsey Paris?
The Samsonite is made of PET/ recycled water bottles. The Delsey is made of polycarb. Polycarb is more durable than PET. I thought about returning the Delsey because it is smaller, but I decided to just keep it because it will last longer for future use.

I am looking for lighter weight bags for international travel as well. Any recommendations?

for international travel, is carry on better in hardshell or soft?
Carry-on gets the least abuse so it doesn't really matter.

But generally soft luggage is more durable. People mainly choose hard-sided for aesthetic reasons. Look at flight crews and all their bags are soft-sided.

Also depends where you're going internationally. Those old cobblestone streets of Europe are killer on any rolling luggage. I'd just bring a big hiking backpack if possible.

All I heard was "GET OFF MY LAWN!" 😂

JK! Soft bags are almost always the practical choice just not the stylish choice currently.

So many times I see checked hard shell bags come out with a wheel and entire corner missing.

You can get a very reliable smaller soft bag for $150. If I did buy a hard shell bag I'd spent nearly twice that and hope.

A million miles logged in 30 years.

As for my lawn … 👀

No true. The internal fiber are made of PET. The outer shell are polycarbonate actually. Pretty much most hardshell products from Samsonite are made of polycarbonate/Makrolon. The high-end lines are made of CURV though.

Both the Samsonite and Delsey check-in luggage exceed 62 inches in total (which is the standard for international luggage in flights). The softside luggage even if dimensions exceed by an inch or two (depends on packing/extension), would be within the limits though with the hardside luggage one cannot reduce dimensions by loose packing.

While traveling internationally, almost all major airlines focus only on weight for checked baggage, but I never understood why the luggage manufacturers do this.

Note: Be wary of Emirates as they are at 59 inches for checked baggage - if they decide to enforce, many will be in trouble and will have to pay excess fees (also carryon is limited to 1 item @7kg/15lb including personal item - so pretty much carry-on luggage or laptop bag - Biz/First class can have carry-on+personal bag).
