14.9 pounds for the larger bag is hefty. Even cheaper hard-side spinners top out at 11 pounds. Your useful load is 35 pounds for this bag.

I actually bought both the Delsey and this Samsonite set for a three week family trip. I ended up returning the Delsey and keeping this Samsonite set. It's larger, has better internal organization, and felt overall better quality than the Delsey.

Maybe I am old school but we prefer soft bags, specially carry-ons. For one simple reason - we end up opening the carry-ons on long (8+ hours) flights couple of time onboard. Hard case ones makes it so much difficult to open in the tight space you have onboard because both sides (top and bottom) of the luggage would need to lay flat. On the flip side, soft case ones, you just open the top/lid part. So it makes it so much easier to access stuff in soft case ones than hard case ones.

They had both the samsonite and Delsey hard and soft Luggage sets in Irvine.

Delsey soft and hard were $179 for the sets.

Samsonite soft Renew set was $219.

Samsonite featured was slick deal price.

Went into the local Costco today to check this set out. The set looked and felt great and sturdy, but didn't pull the trigger as the carry-on was not expandable.

for international travel, is carry on better in hardshell or soft?
When I travel by myself internationally, I would just take duffel bag for carry on. If I travel with my family, I would take hardshell.

All I heard was "GET OFF MY LAWN!" 😂

JK! Soft bags are almost always the practical choice just not the stylish choice currently.

So many times I see checked hard shell bags come out with a wheel and entire corner missing.

You can get a very reliable smaller soft bag for $150. If I did buy a hard shell bag I'd spent nearly twice that and hope.

A million miles logged in 30 years.

As for my lawn … 👀
I ended up buying two different hardshell checked roller bags because the softshell ones I had been using were very quickly getting beaten up by the baggage handlers, with the fabric started to wear thin and expose the metal reinforcements underneath. I travel a lot, and I would say after about 30 to 40 flights with both hardshells, one of them has a few scuffs, but no broken wheels or any other issues. One of them was a Samsonite, and I think the other was an American Tourister (may not have been...it was an inexpensive Target purchase).

For carry-on, I would look at a softshell if you plan on doing anything with longer flights where you may need access to whatever is in the bag. Like a poster above mentioned, you can actually open the softshell bag mid flight, plus you also typically get better organization (more pockets).

just make sure you grab some airtags for your luggage because airlines have been terrible with managing luggage lately

Didn't the Delsey sale end? Back to full price at the warehouse?

Ten year is a joke and also some credit card travel warranty specially Chase Reserve. My airline to Paris broke my carryone forcing me to checkin, I claimed them the broken one and replaced with a similar but smaller one

I always use hardshell. And I learned to buy good quality suitcases. Once 2 of my checked in luggages were obliterated - missing wheels, pierces of the shelf gone. If anyone puts something between the material and the shell - please do not.
The hardshell is easier for me because nothing will get squished inside and the spinner wheels make it easier during the transfers.

I have been traveling a lot to Europe and back with my family. And when my kid was young and I had to go though 3-4 flights one way, the spinners were a godsend during the transfers. And often I had 2 carry on luggages (my child).

The secret is how you pack - anything that you need for the flight/during the flight goes in a backpack, that's my personal item. This goes under the seat. I have charging cables, tablet, before the era of tablets I had a book or a magazine, wipes, pills we need during the travel, maybe light jacket (depending on the season). When my kid grew up a little bit - she had her own little backpack.
The carry on luggage - things I cannot or I will not check in - pills, maybe the big DSLR camera, laptop, change of clothes, etc.

This system has worked for me the best. I had never had to open my carry on luggage during the flight.

The website is wrong. The box says it's 10.8 pounds.
