The biggest problems with these language learning apps is the people that skulk around and shame you from using them because it's not going to make you fluent in a language. Yes, you're not going to learn Spanish perfectly without resources outside an app, but it really helps getting started and remaining on the course to learning an additional language.

I have a 5+ year streak going and can tell you without a doubt I know multitudes more Spanish now than I did when I started. Would I have learned more Spanish in those 5+ years if I took classes? Absolutely, but I took Spanish in school for 13 years and barely learned anything. It's all what you make of it

Incidentally, I renewed mine today for $59. Also, I completed 1,000 day streak today!. I started with the free version. It limited how much I can learn. I then switched over to the paid version and it has been worth it. I speak a good Spanish now (I am 65y old) and understand 90+%. I am going to Mexico City in 2 weeks so that I can use my skills and learn more Spanish too. Please remember that paying $59 doesn't make you fluent in Spanish. It is the time you spend learning and this app makes that possible. $5 a month is worth it. There are also free podcasts to learn conversational Spanish, but very limited.

Any idea how to get this promotion as a current subscriber? My sub ends Jan 10, feels bad to be penalized for not having my subscription expire at the 'right time'.

Not paying a dime after the supposedly "better" UI. Installed an old version of the app to continue to use the old interface. Also using pi-hole to block their ads.

I have and use both. Drops is mostly for vocabularies, you don't learn grammar or full sentence or conversation with it. It actually helps my kids better since they're building up their vocabularies and not worry about grammar… but it has some weird translation that can't be fixed even after reporting. Duolingo is more advance in teaching grammar and full sentence, with speaking and listening questions. It's AI-based and still has some flaws, but better than book-only.

Duolingo is still free for learning and lessons. I'm still using it free everyday. But paying improves learning experience and save time: gets rid of the annoying ads that pop up after every single lesson, gives the "unlimited hearts" so we can make mistakes and tries again instead of waiting for refill/ restore, and paying also allow lesson reviews..

There are a lot of things to like about Duolingo, but their business shows either a lack of maturity or outright negligence.
Pricing is hard to find.
Pricing is unclear when you do find it.
There's almost no modern security on the account (not even basic multifactor).
There's no direct communication with anyone running it.
Site focuses on ESL more than linguistic learning overall.
In my humble opinion, it feels like the company is on autopilot, and has been for some time.

Check your local library for free language learning apps/resources. Mine provides access to Mango and Transparent Language Online

I wouldn't pay $80 a year to learn, although I do like Duolingo and have been using it for years. The last two years, I've used an AMEX offer that was $40 back on a $75 or $80 purchase, basically making it half price. For that amount, I'm happy to enjoy the learning ad-free and support the company. If the offer comes back a third year next year, I'll do it again. If not, I'll probably go back to the free version.

You don't have to stop until they restore. If you click on any lesson and "practice" it gives you another heart for every completed practice lesson. You can also click on the heart area and press "practice" from there to refill your hearts. It just is a little slow/tedious because you can't pick what words or lessons they show you in the practice.

Tried both, stuck with Duolingo since drops limited the number of lessons you can do if I remember correctly.

Spanish is my native language. I also speak French and English fluently and I have been using this app to learn Portuguese for the last 75 days, I can tell you that it may not be the best way to learn a language, but it will certainly teach you the conversational basics. Maybe you haven't put enough time into it?

Drops is very bad. I bought 2 lifetime subs last year and the app gets worse and worse. They are changing translations to the wrong words, translating city names as other city names, adding messages after every few answers that drag a 10 minute lesson to 20 minutes. Overall it'sa very poorly made and maintained app. That said duolingo is terrible for tracking you and your kids, and the new single path thing they've done make it pretty bad as well. The library here offers an app "mango" for free, and it seems to me more like traditional lessons.
