  • About Duolingo:
    • Lessons focus on a real-life goal — for instance, ordering at a restaurant. Learners develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to achieve that goal through lots of varied practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
    • Duolingo allows learners to discover patterns on their own without needing to focus on language rules — the same way you learned your first language as a child. This approach, called "implicit learning," is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge of a language and its rules.
    • At Duolingo, we're committed to improvement. Test questions are embedded throughout our courses to measure how learners are progressing — and to show where Duolingo can improve.

The biggest problems with these language learning apps is the people that skulk around and shame you from using them because it's not going to make you fluent in a language. Yes, you're not going to learn Spanish perfectly without resources outside an app, but it really helps getting started and remaining on the course to learning an additional language.

I have a 5+ year streak going and can tell you without a doubt I know multitudes more Spanish now than I did when I started. Would I have learned more Spanish in those 5+ years if I took classes? Absolutely, but I took Spanish in school for 13 years and barely learned anything. It's all what you make of it
Incidentally, I renewed mine today for $59. Also, I completed 1,000 day streak today!. I started with the free version. It limited how much I can learn. I then switched over to the paid version and it has been worth it. I speak a good Spanish now (I am 65y old) and understand 90+%. I am going to Mexico City in 2 weeks so that I can use my skills and learn more Spanish too. Please remember that paying $59 doesn't make you fluent in Spanish. It is the time you spend learning and this app makes that possible. $5 a month is worth it. There are also free podcasts to learn conversational Spanish, but very limited.
Any idea how to get this promotion as a current subscriber? My sub ends Jan 10, feels bad to be penalized for not having my subscription expire at the 'right time'.

I actually use free version for spanish and never want to pay for sub.For me, it's more of a challenge. I do miss the podcasts where you listen to alexandra and roberto? It had horrible feedback when repeating and responding but I guess that's why they offered it for free so that they could train their speech pattern recognition.

I payed someone random to get on their family plan. Of course could always just be kicked out but was worth the risk. Got a one month streak now. Helps if you have friends who use it. I learned a little Spanish in HS but this has helped fill some more gaps. Just little and little more exposure each day

There are ads on duolingo? My mom has been using the web based version for half a year, doesn't seem to have any issues.
The web version is separate. No lives and can use pop up blocker for ads. Though I think it's still in preview

Top tip, you can make a duolingo classroom for free, that gives you unlimited hearts https://schools.duolingo.com/ it does remove some of the social stuff. I didn't like that so I left the classroom I had created, and I still have unlimited hearts.

I've been using the web version for 4 years, and it's superior to the app. The web version is mobile responsive also so you can use it on your phone pretty easily

How does this compare to Rosetta Stone for conversational fluency?
After a while, I found the "gamification" kinda sucks.

Also, I'm using the app on a huge iPhone but the answers are always on little tiny hard to read chicklet buttons. Yep, I'm older, but I still don't need glasses when I use my phone.

I've used Duolingo for a few years and have been a Family Plus member for about a year. I used to like the app a lot but recent changes to the app make it much less flexible. It forces you into a specific learning path. I will not be renewing my paid subscription when it comes up for renewal.
Recent updates keep removing functionality, like the ability to pick your lessons, and competing with friends on the app, among others
I use Spanish primarily, so I can't confidently speak about other languages but I believe the same format is used for all of them. Duolingo used to be the best out there but now I think the playing field is leveled wth app like Drops and Rosetta Stone.

I opened the app that I had previously downloaded and it still states 83.99. Anyone know how to get it at the discounted price? Thank you!

This app did a great job teaching me to say that my grandma has a girlfriend.

Mine auto-renewed for $59.99 on Android last week, so seems to be the normal price.
It's currently 83.99 a year through the Play store, with a strikethrough indicator that it's marked down from $155.88 a year.
